June Prompt Day Three: “Maine Summers”

The prompt: Write a reflective poem about the longest days of the year (summer in the North) or the darkest ones (winter in the South).

The sky wears blue like silk today,

embroidered with clouds that drift and play—

goofy faces, gentle beasts,

hearts that pulse with summer’s feast.

The birds compose a bright refrain,

notes stitched across the vast domain

of swaying trees and laughing air,

each breath a balm, each breeze a prayer.

The evergreens, proud sentinels,

stand deeper green than words can tell.

Their needles catch the light like lace,

a quiet joy, a forest’s grace.

Rivers, swollen with memory—

melted snow from months gone wearily—

now sing again through hills and stone,

through sleepy towns once ice-bound, lone.

But Maine has woken. Wide and wild.

Its fields now stretch like dreams beguiled.

Adventure blooms in every glade,

each sunbeam worth the price we paid.

For only those who’ve braved the freeze,

the frozen stars, the biting breeze,

deserve to feel this warm delight—

this endless day, this softer light.

Yes, you must earn these skies of flame—

if you can’t love the winter’s name,

you do not get to hold the hand

of summer’s soul in northern land.
