The animal of the month for February 2021 is the lovebird! I chose this animal as I own a lovebird, and also February is the month of love as many may call it, because of Valentine’s Day!

Lovebirds, or as they are known in Latin Agapornis, are small parrots. There are several different species of lovebird (or colours) and the most famous of these (that you may have heard of) are: the fischer’s lovebird, the peach faced lovebird and the yellow collared lovebird (although there are others). There also may be hybrids, which result in a mixture of different shades of colours. Depending on the exact species they may be anywhere from 13-16cm long (or 5-6 inches). They are very sociable and very affectionate birds, and can bond very well with their owners. They are therefore very good as a companion pet, and are perfect for people who may not have the resources to take care of a larger parrot.
Lovebirds can live anywhere from 15-20 years with proper care, and if you’re lucky they may even live more than that. Having a bond with them (such as when you hand rear them) adds to their already loving nature. They chatter and whistle and may learn to talk, although talking lovebirds aren’t too common when compared to other parrots’ talking ability. They are inquisitive and always on the go— and needless to say, very intelligent. They are strong biters as well.

Like all parrots, they need a spacious cage and lots of toys to keep them occupied. As said above they have a strong bite— so toys made of natural materials that are firm at the same time are the best for them. When they are properly bonded with their owner, they can show you the love and affection that for example a dog can show you (which surprises many people, as many people keep their parrots caged).
They are native to Africa but nowadays are sold practically everywhere, and most breeders will sell them for a reasonable price.
Did you know?
The Fischer’s lovebird is listed as Near Threatened and the black cheeked lovebird is the closest to Endangered from all of the lovebird species!
