kraken wasn't transformed into a werewolf he was born one. He was the biggest of his 3 siblings so he felt it was his duty to protect them so that explains his protective nature but somewhere along the line he somehow learned most of the languages spoken on the island even though he can't speak them he thoroughly understands them.
