OVERVIEW

The NeuMu-SMG.90 is a high calibre multi-purpose weapon developed by the Neumann Corporation's Munitions Sub-Department for use by the legions of combat automata in use by the Atlessian Combine Martial Services. Despite its staggering price per unit and the difficulty required to manufacture it, it has become the standard-issue weapon of the INC series of combat Automata. The Atlessian state has frequently ordered massive quantities of these weapons to be made in a relatively short period of time, leading to many being of poor quality compared to their older counterparts. As a result of these "emergency manufacturing orders," the mounted variant of this weapon frequently lacks it signature electromagnetic coils used for its railgun attachment.

HISTORY

The SMG.90, like most pieces of staple Atlessian weapon, was first pushed into service during Alterra Astralis' time as Prime . While Alterra had some respect for the Fortress Atlessia initiative introduced by Kellian two centuries prior, she disagreed with her predecessor's views on weaponry. While Kellian had staunchly believed that the current arsenal of the ACMS was more than adequate for supplying its combat personnel, Alterra was a reasonable individual who knew that centuries of constant use would eventually render the current designs obsolete. To supply the newly introduced INC-01 Combat Automata, a weapon befitting such a brutish platform would be designed.

The SMG.90 design phase went rather well compared to the hell that was trying to actually have enough manufactured and supplied to the various ACMS bases on the Outer Fringes of Combine controlled space. The Choir had seen fit to have Alterra 'retired,' however the process of introducing the new Prime was complicated at the time. Initially the more military-minded Minerva Astralis was to be given the title, however genetic abnormalities prevented her from taking the position, leading to her older Gene-Sister, Persphone getting the position instead. The process of selecting the new Prime worried the few privately run weapon's manufacturer's in the Combine, who were unsure if Persephone would wish to continue the munitions orders that Alterra had signed off on.

The other munitions requests at the time were rather mediocre compared to the SMG.90, mostly orders for increased bullet or plasmyr production, and Persephone took note. Resources were reallocated to further the production of the SMG.90 as opposed to simple ammunition, vastly decreasing the time it took to produce the requested 80,000 units, leading to an extra 20,000 units being ordered for production by the Neumann Corporation. Additionally, an Athena Heavy Industries facility on the Fringe world of Acheron would be provided the schematics and equipment needed to produce the weapon, resulting in an additional 1,300 units of the weapon being produced.

While the 1,300 SMG.90s produced on Acheron were easy enough to distribute to ACMS bases in nearby systems, getting the 100,000 units in the Core Regions moved would be far harder to move. The rich elite living in the shadow of the Palace District on Atmoskva demanded that several of the new INC-01 Automata be assigned to protect the more affluent regions of the Atlessian capital. The resulting disagreement between the elite and Persephone would end up with an IT strike team being sent into the lower Palace District to round up and execute the 'seditious elements.'

The 100,000 SMG.90's that were meant to be sent to Fringe Worlds 3 months earlier, would finally end up being shipped Combine-wide, with most ending up at ACMS bases on the front-lines to hold off against whatever foreign invaders might or might not be threatening Atlessia's borders. However, all 100,000 would be supplied to units that had a sizeable supply of INC-01 Automata.

Not even a full year after the delivery of the SMG.90 was fulfilled, General Order Telemon-87-B-4 was issued, demanding the mass mobilisation of the ACMS across Fringe Worlds in the galactic north-east. The Allied Department of Operations Regarding the Exterior, concluding that the Vermes - a species of arachnid like bug that reproduces via spores - would soon threaten the northern border if current migration patterns persisted. As a result, almost every SMG.90 that had been shipped to the northern planet of Anvil-IV would be distributed to INC-01 units across the Northern Fringes in preparation for the commencement of hostilities.

As far as ACMS General Orders are concerned, the events of Telemon-87-B-4 were rather mundane, thanks in large part to the newly produced INC-01 and the SMG.90 that they were armed with. The blitz through Vermes controlled systems was quick and efficient, involving heavy weapons teams fitted with the SMG.90 often advancing ahead of whatever organic military units formed the bulk of a planetary invasion during this time.

The weapon has been used in small amounts throughout various "special military operations" in the decades following General Order Telemon-87-B-4, almost always against the Vermes along the northern border until the species was eventually eradicated by the ACMS and controlled methods by the Allied Department of Operations Regarding the Exterior.

RAILGUN

The railgun attachment for the SMG.90 is intended to allow the weapon to function as an anti-armour weapon at long ranges. The electromagnetic rails for the attachment are located above and below the barrel. Unlike most ACMS railguns which are able to fire almost any metal object that will fit, the SMG.90's simply fires the same .90 calibre round that the standard mode uses. Mounted variants of the weapon do not feature this attachment due to cost cutting methods introduced by Adler Neumann in the past 8 years, which Persephone is increasingly disapproving of.
