Organization:

The Windblown is a Free Company operating in the Disputed Lands and later Slaver's Bay. They consist of two thousand men, including mounted horse and foot soldiers. They are led by a Commander, the current one being the Tattered Prince. His right hand is Captain Caggo, and his left hand is Denzo D'han. Below the Commander in rank is a Paymaster, as well as a number of Captains and Serjeants.

The Windblown's standards are fork-tailed blue and-white banners, with streamers of pale blue silk, on their lances. The men of the company chose their own names, and change them as they wish. According to Dick Straw there are threescore Westerosi in the Windblown, but the company has never been divided by ethnicity. The closest thing the Windblown have to a company tongue is classic High Valyrian.

The Commander's tent is a great grey sailcloth pavilion which the Tattered Prince calls his "canvas castle". It takes the Windblown less than an hour to strike camp. Women are accepted of the company. There is bad blood between the Windblown and the Company of the Cat. The Cats refer to the Windblown as "old greybeards in rags".

The Tattered Prince takes a dim view on deserters and thieves and deals with them harshly. He sends hunters after deserters, and upon being caught a foot is chopped off to make sure they can never run again. If a thief is caught, they lose a hand. The unlucky ones are given over to Pretty Meris, the company torturer.

History:

The Windblown were established in the Disputed Lands around 270AC by the Tattered Prince and five brothers-in-arms. By 300AC, he is the only one of the founders still alive. The Windblown have never been employed in Pentos.

In 299AC, the Windblown and the Company of the Cat found themselves in the Disputed Lands on opposite sides of the battle lines.

Recent events:

The Windblown are hired by Yunkai to fight against Queen Daenerys I Targaryen. Yurkhaz zo Yunzak signs the contract of the Windblown on behalf of Yunkai.

In Volantis, four Serjeants of the Windblown set up a trestle table outside the Merchant's House, calling to every ing man and boy in search of fresh meat to fill their ranks. Prince Quentyn Nymeros Martell, Ser Gerris Drinkwater, and Ser Archibald Yronwood sign on with the Windblown under false names, pledging their swords and service to the Tattered Prince for a year, though in truth it is only a ploy to get to Queen Daenerys in Meereen. Among the Windblown, Quentyn becomes known as "Frog", Gerris as "Dornish Gerrold", and Archibald as "Greenguts".

The Windblown are dispatched to Slaver's Bay, sailing aboard an overcrowded ship tossed by wind and sea. They participate in the Siege of Astapor and the brutal sacking of the city, after which they march for Yunkai. Since the Yunkish commanders exude incompetence, the Tattered Prince decides to play both sides. He orders two dozen Westerosi of the company—Prince Quentyn and his companions among them—, led by Pretty Meris, to pretend desertion and go over to Daenerys. Thus the Windblown will be given the option to turn their cloaks later on, should need arise.

The "deserters" successfully reach the Meereenese, and offer themselves as recruits for the Stormcrows. When Prince Quentyn, Ser Gerris, and Ser Archibald are introduced to Queen Daenerys, they reveal both the true purpose of why they are there, and that the "deserters" had been ordered to change sides, leading to the arrest of their fellows. Daenerys eventually decides to release Meris, who the offers her the of the Windblown in exchange for Pentos. Daenerys declines, not wishing to give the home of Illyrio Mopatis over to a band of sellswords. The Windblown arrive with the main Yunkish host and participate in the Second Siege of Meereen.

After Queen Daenerys disappears atop Drogon, Prince Quentyn s the Tattered Prince. They meet beneath the Purple Lotus, Quentyn bringing his two companions, and the Tattered Prince bringing Caggo, Denzo D'han, and Pretty Meris. The Tattered Prince agrees to forgive the desertion of Quentyn and his companions, as well as aid their attempt to steal a dragon, in exchange for Pentos. The Windblown arrange for a ship to transport one of Daenerys's dragons. They disguise themselves as Brazen Beasts and enter the Great Pyramid of Meereen, but their plot coincides with that of Ser Barristan Selmy to overthrow King Hizdahr XIV zo Loraq, so the codeword has already been changed and they have to kill a number of suspicious guards. They open the dragonpit, but as Quentyn attempts to tame Viserion, Rhaegal bathes him in flame. The Windblown flee the scene in terror.

Ser Barristan sends the captured Ser Gerris and Ser Archibald to speak with the Tattered Prince, and offer an alliance against Yunkai. He released the other feigned deserters as well, so that Gerris and Archibald can tread unnoticed through the Yunkish camp. Ser Barristan is willing to promise Pentos to the Tattered Prince in exchange for the safe return of the Meereenese hostages: Daario Naharis, Jhogo, and Hero.

Lord Tyrion Lannister spots a column of mounted men flying the blue banners of the Windblown flash past the Harridan, one of six great Yunkish trebuchets. Shortly thereafter, the Second Sons are informed that the Tattered Prince has slain Gorzhak zo Eraz, and that the Windblown have gone over to Queen Daenerys. Then Ser Barristan leads a sortie from Meereen, and battle begins.
