The Haunted Forest is a vast woodland located North of The Wall.. The forest itself extends for several hundred miles to the north, before veering in a North/West direction along the foothills of the mountain range known as the Frostfangs.. It then starts dying out and gives way to the wastelands known as the Lands of Always Winter..

The forest is home to various tribes of Wildlings.. The Wildlings use the cover of the forest to approach The Wall and attempt to scale it and raid the lands to the south..

Over the thousands of years since The Night's Watch was founded, the brothers of The Watch have tried to keep the forest clear of the Wall itself.. However due to the dwindling numbers, only have the manpower to clear the woods immediately to the north of Castle Black and a number of other manned castles..

"Long ago, when the Night's Watch was at full strength, the builders would quarry blocks of ice from the frozen lakes of the Haunted Forest, dragging them south on sledges to add to the Wall."
