Casterly Rock overlooking Lannisport
~ By Feliche ~
The Rock of Casterly, crouches in wait before the setting sun, or so it has been described. The castle is carved out of a great stone hill incredulous rock along the Sunset Sea.
Built upon a ringfort on the peak of the great hill, was this house of old. The Casterlys would add walls, gates and watchtowers over the millennia. At its base, Casterly Rock houses large sea-carved caverns. Hundreds of mines shafts riddle the deep of the Rock, due to thousands of years of mining. Still there are veins of gold not yet reached.

"They say there is naught but stone at the heart of Casterly Rock."
- A Game of Thrones, Catelyn VIII
Standing at three times the height of Hightower, The Wall and Oldtown, Casterly Rock spreads two leagues from east to west, encoming gardens, balconies, courtyards, stairways, stables, halls, barracks, storerooms, dungeons and tunnels. In its deepest lairs are found cages where the lions were once kept, cells for the worst prisoners and a sept.
The entrance to the Rock, named the Lion's Mouth, is a monstrously large cavern of two hundred feet. The steps are widened to receive to riders simultaneously. Ports house docks, wharves and shipyards accessed by cogs and longships. The sounds of thunders pound against Casterly Rock where the sea washes in.
Within the confines of the Rock exists a Stone Garden godswood showcasing a twisted Weirwood tree a tenth of Ravenhall's size. Their dead are laid to rest in the Hall of Heroes, a place for renown solders and knights are lain to rest. While the treasury holds what keeps the Lannisters affluent, the gold..protected by gilded and ornamented walls.

The Hall of Heroes

Before the Lannisters and even before the Casterlys the land was settled by animals and The Children of the Forest.
The land was settled by the Casterly's until the Age of Heros, where it is said Lann the Clever swindled them out of their castle and lands.
"The Lannisters were an old family, tracing their descent back to Lann the Clever, a trickster from the Age of Heroes who was no doubt as legendary as Bran the Builder, though far more beloved of singers and taletellers. In the songs, Lann was the fellow who winkled the Casterlys out of Casterly Rock with no weapon but his wits, and stole gold from the sun to brighten his curly hair."
- A Game of Thrones, Eddard VI
Kings of the Rock
Associated with the House of Lannister is the title, Kings of the Rock, which indeed was their seat, The Rock. Nearby, relatives would form Lannisport. With the Andal invasion, young Andals would be invited as wards (hostages in some cases) to Casterly Rock. Per the contents of a lost scroll, Valyrian sorcerers believed their downfall would come from the gold of the Rock.
"Stone, I must be stone, I must be Casterly Rock, hard and unmovable."
- A Clash of Kings, Tyrion
