Why the Dragons will die again or: A song of Ice and Fire

Hi and welcome to another Blog of mine. In this one I want to talk about the question if the Dragons will go extinct again and look at different reasons and argumenrs why or why not they will. I hope you enjoy and thanks for reading.

The first argument for why the Dragons will go extinct again is of course the balance. GRRM already stated that at the end of his book series there won't be any extreme seasons anymore and everything will become normal, meaning that there won't be year long winters and neither year-lasting summers. Assuming that the Night King represents the Winter and the living Ice we can say that he probably will be either defeated or stopped in one or another way.

The Ice in the "Ice and Fire" metaphor would thus be gone, leading to an imbalance between those main aspects and opposing sides that can only be undone by removing the Fire as well. Throughout the story the Dragons are described as

"Fire made Flesh"

Therefore we can assume that the Dragons represent Fire. Of course the metaphor of "Ice and Fire" has many different meanings but in this blog I want to focus on the Dragons.

In my opinion the Dragons are doomed to fall if the Night King will, so the balance will be maintained. In general we often see a connection between the Night King and the Dragons. It could of course just be a coincidence (what is debatable), but at the same time the Night King returned the Dragons did as well. To summarize I think we can say that there is a constant balance between Ice and Fire. (Which is why in my opinion Daenerys and Jon AREN'T ice and fire assuming R+L=J is true in the books, since it would be A song of 1/4 ice and 3/4 fire then.)

ＷＡＲ ＡＮＤ ＤＲＡＧＯＮ ＥＧＧＳ

Beside from the more abstract reasons like those mentioned above are there also many other arguments that are more realistic for why the Dragons will die. In the Show we already saw Viserion dying and Drogon got wounded multiple times. They are not immortal and especially during a war even Dragons are not safe, which is prooven by the Dance of the Dragons.

Referring to the show here, we can assume that D&D probably will have an "epic" Dragonbattle in which Undead Viserion and possibly Rhaegal will fight against Drogon. This event might lead to the Night King's death but I tend to belive that it also will lead to the death of Drogon.

"But there could be other Dragon Eggs or Daenerys' Dragons could have young Dragons as well."

Well, this is of course a possibility but in my opinion the chance of other Dragons hatching is very low, but before focusing more on this topic I want to talk about Dragons in general.

GRRM had us know that Dragons are Hermaphrodites in his story. This means that they are neither male or female and while Drogon, Viserion and Rhaegal were in some way portrayed as male Dragons (especially since they are all named after men from Daenerys' life) they actually are both, male and Female. We also expect that although they hatched at the same time and are described in the following way:

"They are my children."

... that they are not actually "siblings" Since after the Doom of Valyria Dragon Eggs became very rare and it is unlikely to find three of them from the same Parents at a time.

The disappearing of Magic also is a great topic. Dragons, the Nighr King, The Children of the Forest or mystical artifacts are all remains of a time where magic was even more consistant in Westeros, but as we can see did those stories of Magical events quickly became Legends. As already pointed out will the wheater and season conditions become normal again, but how can something ever he normal with a so powerful force like Dragons?

They Represent One of the tow extremes or Ice and Fire in this understanding of the Metaphor, but as much as the Night King is viewed as a threat, the Dragon' are looked at in a similar way. All destroying forces from what we know so far. Daenerys who calls herself the "Mother of Dragons" can barely Control them and if They won't die the risk that provide is too big.

ＳＵＭＭＡＲＹ

Another, in my opinion very important Point I want to Talk about as well is how the Dragons would influence the story... Or in another way: How they won't influence it. Basically, the Targaryens gained and maintained their power trough the force of Dragons. If not for them they weren't where they had been once and we can see how after the Dragons died the power that the Targaryens held died with them.

If the Dragons would survive all these events or if new ones would hatch it is likely that either a Targaryen or any other person hungering for power would use them and especially with a Targaryen who controls Dragons we end up where the story began again. The Targaryen dynasty holding their power trough Dragons. And a story is supposed to continue. Not move back.

To summarize are Dragons too much of an extreme power and the symbolical Fire. Assuming that the Night King who represents ice in this way of thinking gets stopped the Dragons would have to as well, since fire can't exist without ice. Light can't exist without shadows and happiness can't exist without suffering. Opposites depend on each other.
