House Dierlich

Sigil: Badger on Green and Brown Field

Words: Stand Your Ground

____________________________________________

Recently my father tasked me with making a coat of arms or sigil for our family in real life, after he watched Game of Thrones and loved it. So i went back to look at my family history, and took a look at what drives my family in real life. What our personality tells the world . I will begin by going through our words, sigil, and colors and explain how they relate to my family in real life, and will then provide a fictional Westerosi history for the family. I hope you enjoy.

House Dierlich has the philosophy of stand your ground. We are few in number but we are strong, determined, and resilient. We do not budge in the face of adversity and do not compomise our moral code in order to take the "easy way out."

When it comes to physical confrontation, we do not back down even when the odds are stacked against us. We might lose, but we never voluntarily surrender against an enemy. We will fight to the last breath of need be.

In none physical confrontation, we are strong willed and stubborn. If we believe our solution to be the best choice, we will argue our point until it is accepted by others. We will not settle for less, when we know we have the best course of action. Conpromise is rare within the family, but outside the family, conpromise can sometimes be used, but only if it enhances our already solidified goals and ideas.

Our house sigil is a grey badger on a green and brown field. The badger represents determination, the willingness to persevere, and the idea that anything is possible.

Badgers have been seen as a symbol for stubborness, persistence, and strong will. We Dierlichs embrace this philosophy. Once we start something, whether it be a fight or a deal, we will always see it through to the end, and never take the easy way out, fighting against all odds.

Badgers are also meant to represent independence and isolation. Once a badger is done weening, it will depart and forge its own path. In my family, leaving the home is considered one of the proudest moments, and coming back to be shameful. You are expected to find your own way, and find success through the grit of your teeth. We are also very aggressive when threatened. While we are a small house, we make our presence known to both friend and foe alike.

House Colors

The grey color of the badger represents neutrality and peace. While we are strong willed when brought into the fold or confronted, we prefer to stay out of conflict and keep to ourselves. Whether it be politics, or social issues, we have our ideas about what we believe, and share the idea that everyone should be treated fairly and equally.

Green and brown are both earthy colors, signifying our down to earth nature. We fight for what we want, but we are humble about it once we have it. We do not flaunt our belongings or status in the face of others.

Brown by itself represents honesty, reliability, and security. It is also the color of mud and dirt, signalling we arent afraid to get our hands dirty in a fight. Were honest about what we want and our intentions. But if pushed, we will fight dirty in order to stabd our ground and win at all costs.

Green represents nature and growth. We value nature in all its aspects, and believe in personal growth as we get older. It is also a sign for money, something we Dierlichs to value to a degree and work hard to obtain.

Dierlichs in Westeros

The Dierlichs we not an old house. They rose to power in The Reach after the Age of Heroes. Our founder, Peter Dierlich was forced to flee from his home in the Stormlands after his village was burned and destroyed. When he and his family reached the western part of Westeros, they built a stronghold carved into a mountainside. It was small at first, but anyone who was fleeing an enemy or attacker was always welcomed with open arms.

Peter named his stronghold The Burrow, and with the help of all those who came to him, the Burrow grew in size and became a sanctuary for refugees.

For a time, things were peaceful until he was again confronted by a larger, house and their army, the name of whom has been lost to history. This is because when The Burrow was attacked, Peter convinced the former refugees that it was time to stop running, and time to stand their ground against their enemies.

Wave after wave attacked The Burrow, but due to its defensive location and the determination of the inhabitants, they were repelled. The army was beaten back and their leader was killed in battle. The army scattered and the name of the defeated house was lost to history forever.

For generations, the Burrow prospered and grew. Their small stronghold became a fortress, and the mountain range in which The Burrow was located was not invaded again. The people traded with other cities and houses and The Reach and grew in power. They could have used their now growing military to invade and conquer other houses and lands, but ibstead they chose to remain where they were, in the safety of the mountins.

Then the day came when Aegon the Conqueror came to Westeros. After House Gardner was destroyed and House Tyrell took power, Aegon demanded the other houses of the Reach to swear fealty to the new Wardens of the South, and to Aegon and his Sister wives.

House Dierlich refused, believing that bowing to a foriegn invader was the ultimate act of shame. So they stood their ground and refused.

However, their house words, "Stand Your Ground" that had served as their inspiration for freedom, became their downfall.

The Burrow could withstand any siege or assault from the land. However Aegons dragons completely desimated the stronghold and its army. The soldiers defending the fortress were roasted alive while stubbornly refusing to surrender or kneel. A fate they ended up sharing with Harren and all his sons at Harrenhal.

The head of the Dierlich family stayed behind to fight and die with honor, while sending his youngesy son away. Everyone in the Burrow was killed. Thousands dead, except one. The youngest son eacaped, and made his way to Dorne, the land known to withstand the dragons. From their he eacaped to Essos, were he created a small home and started a family. Their former glory was gone, and all that was left was the last remaining Dierlich living a humble life in exhile. The current whereabouts of the family are unknown at this time.

But if they had survived in hiding over the last three hundred years, then perhaps now with the Targaryens finally overthrown and the dragons extinct, we may finally see the return of House Dierlich to Westeros.

Also, the pictures of Aegon and his wives, as well as the map of the Reach and the mountain fortress are not mine. All credit goes to their respective owners. However the house sigil and everyting associated with that was made by me on photoshop.
