daenerys vs. azula: eerie similarities

there are undoubtedly parallels with asoiaf and other shows, movies, etc. i decided to one parallel that undoubtedly stands out to me is daenerys targaryen to the iconic azula from “avatar: the last airbender.” here are some examples of how there arc is similar. also, this is my entry for #MayThe4th. enjoy!

before we completely start, i should get one thing straight the big difference between azula and daenerys is that while dany is a protagonist in a game of thrones, azula is quite the opposite, serving as a foil to aang and his team avatar. yet despite these contrasting starts, both woman end up in the same place nearing the end of their stories, in madness. daenerys ends with burning king’s landing and azula with her spiral into madness demonstrated in her final fight against her brother and katara.

similar symbolism

one thing undoubtably resembles both azula and dany, fire.

be it dany’s ties with dragons or azula’s prowess as a firebender, this dangerous and powerful element symbolizes both of these characters. it can be strong and calculated, like the dany we know in essos or the azula at the beginning of avatar; fire can also be deadly and unruly like the aforementioned directions these characters are taken. it’s beautiful and fierce, strong and deadly.

another relation they have that i’d like to talk about is their complex relationships with family. while azula has a tight bond with her destructive father, and daenerys a high regard for rhaegar and rhaella, both of them have complex relationships other of family. azula has had a rivalry with her brother, partially fueled by her fear that her mother hates her. while this isn’t really the case, azula’s internalized insecurities emulate this belief. daenerys also has a complex family relationship, specifically with her brother viserys, who while being abusive, remains her only living relative as far as she knew for a while.
