Well in the show it would certainly seem that Boltons are all assholes and the Starks are all honor bound heroic fools. But in the books it's much more grey. In fact if you look at all the recorded actions of the Starks in the world book or at Lady Dustin's story from Dance you get a the idea that Ned was an exception to what you would expect from the Stark line. He certainly was nothing like his siblings at all and before you say but Benjen was a good guy. Think about what you really know about that character other than from Jon's pov. You can't really even trust jojens pov because of his families bais.
