Much like Mugwort, African Dream Root, is a psychoactive, legal plant. It is often used in dream magick or to embark on a spiritual journey. According to the Pekuni Native American tribe, you mustn’t give this to anyone else other than yourself because you can be in danger of a dream invasion by the person you gave the substance to. At the same time though, you can cross over to their dreams as well. This plant, when consumed, will cause lucid and vivid dreaming. The typically activation time (when it kicks in) is usually when you go to sleep. It should take anywhere from 1 to 3 days for any real effect(s). Effects vary.

Preparations

Since this is a legal product, you can get this in stores or online. Often times, this root will be already powdered. For those of you though who like getting the whole of the plants rather already proportioned, you can get them in whole roots. Costs are medium for the amount you’ll receive. I’d personally recommend a denser mortar and pestle such as any of the stones and marble rather than the light ones like wood or husks. If wood or husks are all that you have, that’s fine. The reason for the denser mortar and pestles is because the roots are coarsely fibrous. This means when grinding them, they need a little more force than if you were to grind your typicals.

Put 30 mg for a beginner’s amount of roots into the mortar Once you are comfortable with the root, go up to 200 to 250 mg as normal dosage. With your pestle, grind the roots until you get a fine powder. Any loose ends will make it hard to consume. Once you have your fine powder, obtain a clear container of any sorts. I use a mason jar. Fill it ½ with cold water then put your fine powder in the container. Close the lid tightly. Shake the container aggressively until you see a lot of froth on the water. Open the jar and eat the froth. Repeat = shake, eat. Eat the froth until you are either bloated or the until you cannot collect anymore.

Do note that the effects won’t go away if you defecate or urinate. You can drink the water or eat the root straight but be warned, it has a terribly bitter taste. Imagine eating the husk of a peanut then multiply that by 40. It is suggested but not enforced one should eat/drink the froth before they go to sleep to ensure maximum results. It can also be made into a tea as well. If going forth with the tea, add ground ginger and ground cinnamon to mask the bitter taste of the root.

Lore

Silene Undulata plays a huge part in the Xhosa culture. In the culture, dreams are often seen gifts or messages given to the Xhosa people by their ancestors. Often times, their ancestors are described as “drifting white winds” or ghosts. These dreams are seen as healing guidance. Do take into consideration that this herb dates back a 1,000 years and is one of 300 psychoactive herbs used in the Xhosa culture. It is a dream essence to them and is favored amongst shamans and diviners as a way to seek guidance or come into with their ancestors.
