Welcome Hatchlings to January's mythical creature feature. January's mythical creature is on Griffins as January is all about the House of Light and the Griffin is their mythical creature.

The house of Light is all about focusing on light, healing and remedies and so of the house tend to be on the right sided path such as Wicca. The saying of the house is "Shining with Brilliance of self" and house mascot is Griffins which is why it is the mythical creature focus today!

What is a Griffin?

A griffin is a mythical creature, which is comprised of a lions body, an eagles head and normally has wings (although some descriptions have shown them without wings).

It has been suggested that it originated from the eastern part of the world. Whilst some people believe they originated from Ancient Greece, they have also been seen in representations in Ancient Persia and in Ancient Egypt. This suggests that descriptions of them have been seen dating back all the way to the 4th millennium BC. Representations of the Griffin have also been found on the island of Crete in Greece, in the Throne Room of the Bronze Age Palace of Knossos which have been around since the 15th Century BC.

Characteristics of the Griffin

They are seen as "king of all creatures" and their personality matches that. They are very noble creatures who can be very protective and when needed fearsome. They can become very protective over what they see as their territory which can include sacred land, treasures or royal families. They also tend to have one mate for life. Griffins despise evil and will fight to keep it away from their territory.

As Griffins are mythical creatures they have special abilities. Their claws and feathers are said to have healing abilities. They also have the strength of the lion and are able to fly due to being part eagle and having wings.

Griffins in the media

Rick Riordan the author of the Percy Jackson series and the Kane series uses Griffins in his fictional work. They appear in the The Heroes of Olympus series, in the books The son of Neptune and the House of Hades and also in the The Trials of Apollo series in the book the Dark Prophecy.

In the Spiderwick chronicles, written by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black. Arthur Spiderwick met a Griffin who lived in a remote mountain that was fond of eating Salmon. They then appeared in his book, Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You. In the Spiderwick Chronicles, a griffin named Byron was a very famous Griffin who was being held in the Goblin camp who was saved by Simon.

Griffins also appear in the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. They fought for Aslan's Army during the battle of Beruna. They also fought during the War of Deliverance, in the Old Narnian Army. They do not appear in the books, however they do appear in the films and in the BBC's adaptation of the story, as well as in the games.

Griffins have also appeared in other media such as the World of Warcraft and Dungeons and Dragons games.

Griffin Symbolism and working with them

As stated above, Griffins are highly associated with being fearsome, being highly noble and being protective. This makes them very majestic creatures with a lot of power and might. Due to that, they are also associated with being guardians. Apollo himself worked with Griffins to help protect his treasures.

Therefore, one way to work with them is to work with the Greek deities especially Apollo, Athena and Nemesis Because Griffins are associated with them. Visit the Hellenism chatroom which can be found here to find out more information.

Another way to work with them is to have statues of them on your altar, as well as other items which can represent them. As Lions claws and Eagle feathers are somewhat hard to come by, you could use other alternatives such as feathers that you find during walks or cat nails when you are trimming them during routine grooming (as cat claws should not be overly long as this can cause health issues for the cat).
