Max grew up as an orphan in the Boston quarantine Zone and attended a military preparatory school, where he met and befriended Riley Abel. When Max was Nine, the pair were both infected with the Cordyceps brain infection, where Max soon discovered he was immune. A friend of his mother's and the leader of the Fireflies, Marlene, believed that he was the key to reverse engineering a vaccine. Marlene tasked David , a smuggler, with escorting Max outside of the QZ. The simple drop-off turned into a year-long journey across America, and the two eventually formed a close bond.

After losing his only daughter Sarah in the early stages of the outbreak, David became a ruthless and cynical smuggler eventually tasked with smuggling and protecting Max, a young boy who was the key to mankind's survival.David eventually formed a strong bond with him.

Cameron and David both found their way to the Boston Quarantine Zone after Sarah’s death. As the only family either of them had left, they were, at first, dedicated to sticking together and surviving no matter the cost. David and Cameron took on tough, inhumane jobs, likely even more dangerous and deadly than the kind of stuff David eventually does with Gwen. While David was able to harden himself and sink deeper into his nihilism, Cameron was getting worn down by it and later expressed that their actions left him with nightmares. Fed up, Cameron was convinced by Marlene to the Fireflies, a group that hoped to stop the tyrannical rule of Quarantine Zones under FEDRA militarized rule. His newfound ideology caused a rift to form between him and David leading to a blowout argument that ended with Cameron saying he didn’t ever want to see David again. From there on, Cameron left the Boston QZ with some Fireflies and headed west.

Gwen was born in Rockford, Illinois, on February 26, 1991 After the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak, she became a smuggler in the Boston quarantine Zone living in Area 4. While there, she met David. The two became partners; David serving as the muscle while she was the brains in their operations. The two became close, Gwen even affectionately calling him "Texas" and the two flirted with each other during their missions, heavily relying upon each other in the post-pandemic world. With Gwen having various s in the Boston underworld and a no-holds barred approach, she and David earned a ruthless reputation, to the point where their fellow survivors within the QZ did not attempt to cross the two.

Quartermaster was well-equipped for survival before the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak, having obtained mechanical skills at some point in his life as he is able to repair vehicles and build things from scraps. He also adapted to the new world and became a competent scavenger.At some point prior to 2033, Quartermaster and his partner Frank were the only survivors living in Lincoln, a town that was populated by an unusually large number of infected. However, at some point,Frank left Quartermaster on his own and disappeared.To protect himself from the infected and hunters, Quartermaster constructed many barricades and traps around his hometown.After having met David and Gwen nearby Boston at some point, he made smuggling arrangements with them, trading food, ammunition, and occasionally medicine into the QZ. By summer 2033, Bill had racked up quite a few favors to David for unspecified reasons.

As a Firefly, Bonquisha fought against the totalitarian rule of the military within the quarantine zones to restore a form of functional government. The Fireflies have been successful in overthrowing military rule in several zones, namely Salt Lake City but their efforts have not always achieved the desired results, as in Pittsburgh. Despite her and her organization's attempts to restore order, their numbers dwindled as the military cracked down and killed found within the zones. In addition to all this, Bonquisha had her organization keep a close eye on Max as part of her promise to Anna, Max's mother with whom she was long time friends, even before the outbreak.She was once close with David's brother, Cameron, when he was a member of the Fireflies. After a while, however, Cameron gave up on the cause and decided to leave. Before he left, he told Bonquisha that if she ever needed anything, she could count on David to help her.

Harrison was born in late 2005 and grew up in Hartford, Connecticut. He was just 5 years old when the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak began. When he was 12 years old, his sister Narris was born, whom he cared greatly about, becoming her guardian. As an adult, he mainly re the smells of barbecues and backyard cookouts from his childhood as opposed to the actual events themselves. According to Narris, Harrison was also religious, believing in the afterlife and that, through it, he and Narris would see their family again.

Narris was born in 2013 and grew up in Hartford, Connecticut, with her older brother Harrison. They lived in the city's quarantine zone until 2033, when the military abandoned it. With their safety no longer guaranteed, they and a group of survivors moved on in search of a secure home. The group's intention was to meet up with the Fireflies somewhere out west. On the suggestion of another person in their group, they venture into Pittsburgh for supplies. Their group scatters after being ambushed by the hunters who have taken over the city.Prior to splitting up, they all agreed to meet up again at a military radio tower just outside the city.
