How Did We Get Here?

Today I bring you a fanfic for the Phanfic Club!

This month we had to write a fanfic based off of the prompt "Sleepless Nights"

. My head swims more and more with each steady beep that comes out of the countless machines hooked up to my best friend. How did we get here? No.. More importantly, WHY are we here? He just turned 29 only a few months ago. He doesnt deserve this.

"Phil?" His labored breathing slides into rocky coughing as he grabs my hand. "Can you tell the nurse I'm ready for my procedure?" I can tell by the look on his face that despite my unstable and broken demeanor, he's trying to be strong for the both of us.

"Of course, love.." My voice is shaky and I can't help my lip quivering as I turn away from him. God, this hurts so fucking bad and I'm not even the one thats about to be on the god damn operating table in a couple of minutes.

My shoes faintly clack on the hard concrete floors as I walk for the door but I can barely hear it. Thoughts swarm around my brain like angry bees and I can feel the contents of my stomach trying to creep up the back on my throat like a congealed sludge of regret and heart-break. What if he doesn't make it out? What if the last image I have of the love of my life is a frail, nearly lifeless shell of what he used to be? I don't think I can live with that…

The bright, digital face of the hospital room clock 3:45 am as I head out the door. I feel as if the numbers mock me more and more every time I yawn and desperately wipe away the sleep from my eyes.

Tonight is going to be a long night…
