                 Something was wrong with her hand. She slowly lifted her hand to see better in the dim sepia light, hoping that her eyes were just playing tricks on her. Her sleeve hung over her wrist, but the hand underneath it was not hers; it was large, it was square, it was outlined in thick black, and it was sepia-toned. Gone was the pale skin she knew, replaced by the same sepia color as her surroundings.

                 Her breath hitched. She moved her fingers. The strange hand moved. No matter the angle, black outlined her hand and separated her from the rest of the world. No fingernails. No wrinkles. Only lines, dark lines defining its shape. She blanched, hastily checking her other hand.

“Where are my hands!?”

This blocky, lined, smooth sepia flesh on the other end of her arms screamed with abnormality. The hand-shapes moved when she moved her hands. She clawed at them, one sepia hand scratching at the other, but it only felt like she was rubbing and digging at her own skin.

                  She wanted to scream, shout, cry for help, shriek at the sepia skin until it went away, but she could only manage a squeaky wheeze with her tight, unused voice. She bit the inside of her cheek.

“DON’T! Don’t make any noise… don’t make any noise. If this is real, then… then something else is here. Something… behind the boards, by the ink machine. Something that tried to kill me before. I can’t be loud. If I make any loud noise, I might just tell it where I am, then I’m dead! Good as dead! But…! But, but what is this!? Sepia… sepia skin. I… What happened to me!?”

In fact, her empathy is so strong that she can practically sense the emotions of others if they’re nearby, whether she sees them or not.

                ✤ Rory has multiple mental health issues. The first and most notable is her OCD, or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. This disorder manifested as a result of the C-PTSD, or Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, that she developed as she was raised in an abusive household. Her OCD manifests in her uncontrollable compulsion to do many common tasks a certain way, but it mostly shows itself through her pattern-seeking. If she detects a pattern, she can become obsessed with it and will compulsively see it through to completion, no matter how unreasonable it is. On top of that, as another side effect of C-PTSD, she has depression; however, this depression is not as intense as any of her other issues.

Helen Stein

                 Helen is a narcissist who tends to emotionally abuse Rory. Because emotional abuse is hard to nail down, Rory doesn’t really like her mother but isn’t sure why. This often makes her feel guilty for not really loving her own mother, a piece of information that her mother often uses against her. Her mother married into her father’s family and has since successfully separated her husband from the rest of his family.

David Stein

                 David is a kinder parent to Rory, but he has personal stubbornness issues and a desire to be correct, so he’s often an enabler for his wife’s behavior, sitting aside and letting everything happen. Because it often comes across as if he doesn’t really care about her, Rory doesn’t really like her father much either; she likes him more than her mother, but still doesn’t feel safe with him and isn’t exactly sure why she doesn’t like her own father.

Henry Stein

                 Henry is unquestionably Rory’s closest family member. They love one another, and Rory holds an enormous amount of respect for him, aspiring to be like him someday. Even outside of work, they stay in through any means possible.
