❝There are so many stories where some hero decides to give their life to save the day. And because of their sacrifice the guys win, the survivors all cheer, and everyone lives happily ever after. But the hero never gets to see that ending. They'll never know if their sacrifice actually made a difference. They'll never know if the day was really saved. In the end, they just have to have faith... ain't that a bitch?❞

A Commander's Sacrifice-[IC]❝There are so many stories where some hero decides to give their life to save the day. And becaus

I've been through a lot. A lot, as in the training and fighting I dealt with for my comrades. It's been a lot of fun to Oblivion and back, but I'm afraid it'll have to end here. They don't know it, but as we approach the No Man's Land in the centre of the battlefield, I have a feeling my recruits won't make it out with their leader... but I promised them. I promised these soldiers I'd stick with them ever since they were restless recruits. I am their role model; the figure for every inspiration in their life — mother, father, older sibling, and an iring commander in their eyes. I turned to my army of men and women, prepared for another battle, and raised my hand in a battle cry. There's a glint in their eyes; the look of determination, excitement, fear, anticipation...

I'm sorry, my children. I hope you me.

At first, they despised me because of the harsh drills, death training and the mental obstacles forced their way, but inevitably, they learned to ire me. I forged them into the soldiers they are now to conquer Skyrim's rivalries.

As we paraded through the field of corpses, arrows, and freedom, dashing ahead of my soldiers, sword in both hands and without a shield, I ran through the centre, evading the arrows that flew past me. I ignored my comrades' pleas to come back from the danger zone, but I have to do this. They'll die out here. They need a head start. So I glanced through my peripheral vision, capturing both my partners that served as drill instructors, following at my sides. They too, were sacrificing their lives. I nodded towards each of them and raised my blade, unleashing another battle cry.

Good luck.

Win this.

Good writing, but why would the "commander" sacrifice himself? Wouldn't the army just fall apart without him giving commands? And thus more would die?

Like how Harold Godwinsson failed to control his army when William the Conqueror invaded England in 1066, his army got decimated when they took the bait and refused his commands, and once Harold died his army literally scattered.

Sometimes this tactic is generally used to encourage or enrage the army to advance and give their all to destroy the enemy that had slain their own.

The Commander is generally a battle tactician for off field strategy, when he leads a charge its just for morale and bloodlust. The real orders on field come from force leaders whom take charge of their particular troops. For example the Centurions never actually were needed for their forces to win "on field". After the strategy and contingencies were planned out it is the Staff that took charge on field.

A Centurions Regiment consists of 1 Centurion, 1 second in command (pretty sure the term is legate), 18-20 staff that conduct the strategy devised, and 80 legitimate troops.

In addition, King Alexander actually used to lead his troops and when an enemy arrow imbedded itself in his flesh as he led the first charge. This affront to their leader enraged the troops to improve their performance. Generally leading a charge is just simply to inspire, whether the leader is made into a Martyr or survives.
