“i’m sad…” the girl whispered, her fingers dipped in the the cool water; the gentle waves almost comforting her as tears streamed down her pale cheeks. “and lonely… it hurts” she sniffled, her voice barely audible. she wasn’t sure who she was speaking to anymore– exhausthed by the endless crying, begging, waiting. “can’t you return now? you promised… you said it’d only take a few days”

she didn’t even know if he was a human, but the warmth of their shared conversation never faded. she was young and naive when they first met, running away from the hurt at home, from the angry and cruel words meant to wound her. that day was still a vivid memory for her. the initial fear and surprise barely had any part, all she could was: his laughter, his silly antics, his immense kindness.

after his disappearance she had tried to forget him, to convince herself he was just a fragment of her imagination, but it never worked. the pain in her heart was always there, growing stronger with each ing year, her life seemed to only revolve around meeting him again.

so after becoming an adult, she still couldn’t bring herself to leave this miserable town. the thought that he might one day return, that he might search for her, kept her rooted in place. perhaps it was a curse, a curse of loving and grieving someone she wasn’t even sure had ever truly existed… a curse of missing someone so deeply that it overshadowed everything else in her world.
