:star: Greetings! Today I present to you why SVTFOE appeals to audiences older then the targeted demographic that Disney aims for. I’ve divided my reasons and findings into categories. Let’s get started! :star:
FANDOM OVERALL
Recently SVTFOE has been gaining traction for older audiences and has been featured in “adult” (or not children or Disney) stores such as Hot Topic and BoxLunch. Also, from what I’ve seen there are many, many adult fans on Tumblr, Instagram, DeviantArt, and (shudders) Wattpad. Why is that? I’ve listed a few reasons why there is more of an adult population in the fandom and some pros and cons of that.
:star: Cartoons Are Getting More And More Popular :star:
In modern day and age, cartoons are popping and blowing up everywhere to the point where some aren’t even greenlit and they already have a fanbase. Cartoons and mini series’ like Adventure Time, Over the Garden Wall, and Gravity Falls really paved the way for many cartoonists, including Daron Nefcy and the creators of The Owl House, Infinity Train, and many other cartoons. Since cartoons are getting more popular, they get more Comic Con s, merchandise, and other public events and items, which makes it very hard to miss a Gravity Falls item or an Adventure Time item while shopping, even if you’re not a cartoon fan. Because of these very popular kids cartoons (I’m leaving you out, Rick and Morty) and their publicity, there is a bigger chance that adults will see a show like SVTFOE trending on Twitter and check it out.
:star: Nostalgia :star:
One think that is very popular among adults in a Buzzfeed overtaking world is nostalgia, and a lot of popular cartoons now have a lot of it, especially in cartoons like SVTFOE and Gravity Falls. They have childhood nostalgia, which basically means it reminds them of how they used to act when they were children. For example, Gravity Falls has moments and characters that they could’ve related to when they were kids (Mable’s first kiss, sibling love, etc.). Another type of nostalgia that SVTFOE has is TV nostalgia. What’s that? Ever think that SVTFOE is very similar to Sailor Moon? You’ve probably have thought or heard that. Most of the adults that watch SVTFOE now watched Sailor Moon when they were children, so that could also have some nostalgia attached to that.
:star: Humor And Themes :star:
Ever hear a funny but more, adult we shall say, joke in SVTFOE? Yes? Well since there are many more secret jokes that fly over kids heads in cartoons, and they aren’t as wholesome as they used to be, a lot of adults find them more entertaining. Another thing is themes. I’m not particularly talking about smexy smex (I don’t want to get this take down), more of the dark and twisted stuff that is very popular. Gravity Falls is a great example. Ever seen Northwest Mansion Mystery? That is definitely horror movie material, but yet it is in a kids show aimed 6-14 (How did the blood scene get through the censors?). That’s because, in order to get more adult audiences, or simply because it fits the theme, they slip in more adult jokes and themes so the adults can find it interesting and entertaining. It can fully backfire and get the show cancelled, like Invader Zim, or it can semi-backfire and snag yourself the number 7 spot on Top 10 Most Hated Disney Animated Shows by WatchMojo like Gravity Falls.

:star: Pros And Cons :star:
I’ve created a list of a few pros and cons of having an adult audience. I got the bigger ones out of the way first.

More merchandise sold.
As a kid, you have to beg (unless you’re a Brittney) for a book, plush, or anything really that comes out of their favorite show. With adults, they don’t need permission.

Cosplay and Publicity
Comic Cons are having many, many more cartoon s and sneak peeks. Most of the people who go and tweet about them are adults. Another thing is cosplay, which is mostly adults. My friend’s sister is a huge cosplayer, and she went to one of the conventions in LA, and they were swarming with SVTFOE characters, mainly Star, Marco, and Eclipsa.

Clout Overall
If a show has an adult audience, many adults take that as a very good sign, taking in mind that it appeals to an audience in a similar age group.

Award Nominations
Most of the time it’s adults who vote for their favorite show when it is nominated for an award.

The Whole “Comic” Stuff
(Not mentioning any names)
Some adults like to take their favorite cartoon... very seriously. Especially in that detail. And don’t get me even started on fanfics. It’s really disgusting and should be considered illegal or at least taken down. Not celebrated, like in this instance. Put yourself in my shoes for this storytime break:
You are looking through Wattpad looking for fluffy oneshots for your favorite ship, when you see this *imagine the cover*
Obviously I didn’t click on this because I’ve been on this Amino long enough not to, and I know it’s very 18+ even though the characters aren’t even 18 yet. Take in mind that no, Wattpad didn’t take it down, but instead it had 154K reads, 377 votes, and was number 22 on Starco (but was number 3 for a while before I screenshoted it). It’s really disgusting. Imagine a 12 year old girl going through her Wattpad phase and she saw... that. Gross. Anyway! Done with that rant!

Conservative Parents
We all know the drama that happened between SVTFOE, Disney, parents, and the gay kiss, right? Well, that brings me to my next con. Some of the adults who watch these cartoons watch them with their kids, and this ties back to the Humor and Themes category. I’m not saying all parents are like this (because mine are pretty chill with curse words and stuff like that), but the parents who complain about gay kisses and dark themes are usually the problem with making your cartoon appeal to adults. When a parent makes an effort to complain to a network about an episode, usually the kid is 6-11 years old, which is around the time where a kid is clueless and pure. That means that the kid doesn’t even know whats going on. To those parents I say, if it’s that bad, turn the TV to Veggie Tales or something. You don’t need to ruin it for everyone else because you’re too conservative.

Smexulizing The Cosplay
Do that there it is a children’s show in the end. Smex up your anime all you want. But not a children’s cartoon.

:star: IN CONCLUSION :star:
Adults flock to things other adults like. That includes everything, from weird foods, to places, to shows. It helps if you that it is a DISNEY show after all, but it does help a show more than harms it. If you’re an adult and you really love a show or cartoon, it! Get the shirts and the books and the plushies. Because guess what? You’re an adult!
Tysm for reading my first essay type post! I’ll make more if this gets popular, and I’m only posting this now (4:43 AM where I live currently) is because it’s #DWA and if I don’t post it now I’ll forget :)

Good ideer ;)
If you think Northwest Mansion Mystery is bad, have you seen the shows finale (Wierdmagedon 1,2 and 3)? (And I'm that 12 year old gurl!)
Oof yes. I was using NMM as an example because that legit traumatized me, and the finale just scared me I guess lmao xD

Yeah, now I understand (and a person who doesn't like dark cartoons watches Wierdmagedon, to see how "terrible" it is, and then he has a BillCipherPhobia)

Yeah, I loved Gravity Falls but it scarred me xD
Actually I think it appears to all of us kid or not cause there are some kids on here to obviously like I showed my little cousin the show and she loved it!
Yo I am an adult, I am an adult. Nothing quiet spookier than being an adult.
Nice blog, as an adult I'd say I like it for well, the look and concept behind it. Never knew there are more "adults" who like it so that was interesting.
Honestly I still prefer a LOT of the old cartoons I grew up with over the new but the new cartoons do just as good. (Over the Garden Walls is in like the top 10 for me). I also think some of the adults would be aspiring cartoonist. One of the main reasons I still watch cartoons (not counting more adult aimed cartoons lile adult swim) is I plan on partaking in the creation of cartoons so will continue to look at the new, study differences and things that seem to work.
Anywho once again nice blog. I apologize for this annoyingly long comment lol.
That’s really interesting and I hope you become successful! Also tysm for liking it :sparkling_heart: :sparkling_heart: :sparkling_heart: :sparkling_heart:
Weirdos are gonna weird, pervs are gonna perv, not much we can do about it except ignore it. I’ve come to accept that there’s always gonna be a “dark” side to every fanbase. Amazing blog though!!!
Tysm!
