Bismuth: "Hey, cool it, your Ruby is showing."

Fury, sure. Outbursts, sure. Also: ion, immediacy, heat.

Emotion.

You can really see it when her Ruby is showing.

This was a digital experiment that I busted out last night in about 2.5 hours, using Paint Tool SAI. I am a complete beginner who does not know anything about digital art so this is the result of a lot of guesswork.

Also, it's a slightly different style from the show and I'm not sure how I ended up giving her such a weirdly broad face. 🤣

I'll post kind of detailed progress shots because it would be neat if someone who knows more about digital art than I do (read: everyone) could look at my process and give me big-picture advice on how I should proceed differently next time. I am not advanced enough for complex or super-specific critique--I literally don't know what the buttons do yet, so go easy.

Initial head sketch

Your Ruby is showing-[B]Bismuth:
Added her hand and body

Your Ruby is showing-[B]Bismuth:
lightened strokes so I could see for lining

Your Ruby is showing-[B]Bismuth:
drew lineart

Your Ruby is showing-[B]Bismuth:
made separate lineart for her visor

Your Ruby is showing-[B]Bismuth:
turned off sketch layers to leave lineart

Your Ruby is showing-[B]Bismuth:
filled with flat colors

Your Ruby is showing-[B]Bismuth:
added shading and highlights

Your Ruby is showing-[B]Bismuth:
filled the visor with transparent pink

Your Ruby is showing-[B]Bismuth:
added a nearly opaque blue stripe

Your Ruby is showing-[B]Bismuth:
added some white accents to the visor

Your Ruby is showing-[B]Bismuth:
added sparkles to the visor

Your Ruby is showing-[B]Bismuth:
added white textures to the visor and pink highlighting around her hair

Your Ruby is showing-[B]Bismuth:
made the visor a little less transparent and did other touch-ups

There are probably super basic things I did wrong or didn't do, but whatever, I had fun!

I love Garnet. Including when her Ruby shows.

Heh. Nah. I love Garnet and the concept but the execution leaves much to be desired so I will wait until I've drawn something better to ask for that.

This actually looks really good! I never would have guessed that you were a "beginner" when it comes to digital art.

I'm just continuing to be surprised that you think my self taught stuff is worth that much praise. Never took lessons on art or uke or writing so I guess I have a nagging suspicion that nothing I do will ever be "legit." It's not a healthy way to look at it really, but it is what it is!!

I just think it's really amazing that you have enough talent and ion to teach yourself how to do those things so well! I suppose just because you've never had someone else show you how to do it doesn't mean you can't learn it on your own and do it just as well. You really are an example that self taught artists writers and players can be just as good, descriptive, inspiring, and "legit" as those who took lessons or went to a school. Like I never thought you were self taught because your stuff was always so good!! I thought you had to have taken lessons at some point. But now I know that you can be self taught and still have amazing content. I really am just in awe  🙃

Thanks. It's kind of frustrating sometimes because people who have formal training will use terminology that you'll go like "what??" sometimes, and they think they're saying something super basic. I think this probably literally goes back to the beginning of my life now that I think about it. I was starting 1st grade in a new school and at my old school in kindergarten they'd never put me in a reading group because I came in knowing how to read. The new 1st grade teacher gave me a placement test starting from the most basic, and the letters had markings on them to suggest long E or short E etc., and I thought it was some super advanced thing and didn't know what to do so I just cried and the teacher concluded "well she can't read at all" and put me in a remedial reading group. I think I still have moments like that where I skipped steps and then it turns out I'm unaware of something totally basic.

But at the same time, I know there's NOT just one way to do art or music or whatever. People who are very attached to method learning think only one way is legit. So I guess that's a long way of saying that explains why I can play ukulele but am completely pulling strumming patterns out of my butt, or how I draw stuff but don't know anything about color theory and probably don't really understand how light works 🤣
