Steven Universe Podcast: MiniRecaps,

McKenzie opens by saying this episode has a lot to unpack, and Rebecca Sugar and Ian Jones-Quartey eagerly take turns trying to blurt everything they’ve been waiting to show us since the beginning. Ian says Lars being pink was an extremely early concept, as was his attendance at a potluck in a pirate costume (Rebecca drew a picture of it in 2012 or 2013!). They’ve been wanting to do this for such a long time. They always wanted him to be a space pirate, and in Rebecca’s original comics about Lars he was in space in a bar. They had to figure out how they heck they would get him there and what they would do with these characters far into the future.

Steven Universe Podcast: MiniRecaps,

Lars being resurrected went way back in their plans, but they originally were just going to make him part pink, or just have a pink tear mark on his face. Now he has a scar as a tradeoff. The two ideas started coming together, with Lars being a resurrected pink zombie and Lars being a space pirate, though originally he was supposed to die on Earth. Ian re seeing the boards for this and being so excited by the new adventure of Lars fighting Emerald.

Steven Universe Podcast: MiniRecaps,

Ian says he has tons of ideas and thoughts on what happened in between that he’d really love to write. McKenzie prompts them to talk about Emerald, and Ian volunteers that with emeralds being major gems, she was supposed to be a major bad guy. Rebecca says Emerald was special because while Peridot was a low-ranking Gem and Jasper was a decorated soldier with humble origins, Emerald is very important–not the kind of Gem they usually deal with on the show (excepting the Diamonds, of course). So far they’ve been talking to Gems who would answer to Gems who would answer to Gems who answered to Emerald, so she’s a big deal. She leads a fleet. She’s a “glitzy” enemy, according to Rebecca.

Steven Universe Podcast: MiniRecaps,

Ian really likes the Off Colors as the crew, too, and McKenzie loved the text that popped up to indicate their positions and personalities–and the fact that Emerald now completes the birthstone set!

I think emerald’s design is supposed to be kinda based of a pirate.

You think she looks like a pirate, or you heard somewhere that they intended her to look like one? Maybe it's the gemstone covering where her other eye would be.

Idk, it’s my Theory of emerald. The gem on her eye might have gone with the pirate design with Lars.

Ah. I don't think making her seem like a pirate makes much sense since she is being stolen from BY a pirate, but since not all ship captains are pirates, she can still be a fleet commander and sorta match Lars in that way even though she's not pirating anything.
