Though their eyes were closed, both Pearl and Zircon knew exactly what had begun.

The sounds of laughing, running, and the splatter of snow made it clear that war had been waged.

"Mhmgnm." Pearl's quiet mumble meant something in her mind, but Zircon obviously didn't get it.

Pearl, as much as she hated it, slipped her arms back over Zircon's shoulders, meeting the winter chill once more. Zircon jumped and quickly found Pearl's hand again.

Pearl shot her a warm smile before raising her free arm. "Go, Steven!" She called.

Zircon watched a snowball fly across a clearing of about ten feet, hitting Connie in the leg. Connie sighed with relief that her pre-made snowball ammo hadn't been ambushed.

"Connie, duck!" Zircon yelled as a barrage of snow came toward her. Connie leaned back to protect her own snowballs.

Pearl's fingers undid themselves from between Zircon's, and soon she was at Steven's side. Zircon gave her a challenging look and rushed to help Connie.

Pearl and Steven, both surprisingly fast snowball makers, threw them relentlessly, some falling apart in midair. Zircon made each snowball with precision, adding it to the diminishing pile. Connie made good throws, though, many of them hitting the targets perfectly.

"We're going to have to make a big move." Zircon whispered. Connie nodded and took one snowball in each hand. Zircon followed suit.

Connie threw. Zircon gave her two more and she threw again. This repeated until just one snowball remained.

"Huh, an odd number." Connie said. She picked up the snowball and gave it to Zircon.

Zircon threw it as well as someone with close to no throwing experience could. It plopped on the ground a short distance away.

But it didn't matter, Connie and Zircon had already won. Where their opponents once stood were now two laughing bodies.

Zircon and Connie rushed over to them.

"Pearl, are you- aGH!" Zircon was met with a facefull of snow, and it seemed that Connie got the same.

Now four people lay in the drifting white snow, so happy that temperature no longer mattered.
