The Gartic
1 month since the wheel went silent
Barry looked to the stars as his ship orbited coruscant’s star. He’d fallen back on old habits, who was he, if not Barry Stue. Despite his supposed epiphany, nothing had changed. He was still just some lowlife scum making his living in the coruscant underbelly. So many people dead, so many lives ruined, all because of him. There was nothing he could do to change that. He was a dishonest, traitorous, weak coward and there was nothing he could do to change that. He placed his hands on the piloting controls when suddenly the ships viewscreen began to play a message.
“CITIZENS OF THE GALAXY. YOUR NEEDLESS FIGHTING IS OVER NOW. THE WHEEL HAS BEEN BEATEN AGAIN, UNLEASHING ME AND MY FORCES TO RAZE EVERYTHING. IT IS POINTLESS TO REVOLT ANYMORE, BECAUSE THERE WILL BE NO MERCY IN WHAT WE DO. YOUR REGIONS ARE MINE. YOUR LIVES ARE MINE. YOU ARE MINE.”
The wheel was gone? No, that couldn’t be. The wheel had survived Mary Sue, there was no way. Yet Barry felt a strange new presence. This was something else, something far more powerful. Barry raised his hands from the pilot controls. He couldn’t just let this new threat plague the galaxy. Maybe, just maybe, he could do some good in this galaxy.
2 months later
“The ships are starting to get overcrowded, we’re running out of room.” Captain Nightwood told Barry. “We have enough food to last two months, give or take.”
Weeks ago what had been just a handful of outcast survivors had rapidly grown to a small nomadic fleet of 7 cruisers and what had to be almost 6 hundred people.
“Hm, we don’t have much time. Peter, how’s the search for a new home going.”
Captain Frenken looked up. “I’ve come across a promising candidate, Boz Pity, about a 3 days travel from here.”
“Very good” Barry responded. “We’ll settle down there for a bit, you all notify the engers. For now I’ll consider this meeting adjourned, let me know if we run into any issues.”
The captains nodded and made their way to the Gartic’s hangar bay. Barry looked out to the stars as the ship’s crew began to punch in coordinates. He was surprised that someone like him could rise to lead their Brotherhood of Survivors. He would not let these people down. They had put their trust in him, when he still struggled to trust himself. He would lead them to a new home, to a new life. Free from the wheel, free from the galaxy that had taken everything from them. Willing to defend that freedom to the death. Barry turned as the ship jumped to hyperspace, ready for the future that awaited him.

Barry looked around at the old ruins left by the Gargantelles, now repurposed for the brotherhood. Structures hundreds of feet tall now used to house its people. Barry watched as the 7 flags of the Brotherhood were placed atop the ruins of the old rebel base. He rushed to help some of his followers carry a couple of crates off of the ships, probably food from Captain Hornigold’s trip to Bimmisaari. They were growing food of their own as well. Soon enough they’d have enough to leave in search of a new home. Barry was never one to settle down for too long. He took the crate over to one of the brotherhood’s warehouses.
“Let me help with that commander”
Hudson Frenken, younger brother of one of Barry’s captains, had noticed Barry and rushed to help him carry the crate.
“Ah, Hudson, what’s the situation with housing”
“Most people are still sheltering inside the ruins, though a few are setting up tents outside”
“That’s good, the less people we have crowded in here, the more space we have for storage.”
The two placed the crate down.
“Well commander, Im still little biased towards my brother having your spot, but you’ve been great.”
“Ah… thanks, I try my best. I’ll see you around”
Barry left the warehouse, looking around at his new little village. As the sun began to set and people began to gather near the great bonfire in the center of the settlement, Barry climbed atop an old rebel bunker to give a speech. Speakers had already been set up all around the bonfire.
“Brothers, sisters, survivors. I know we have not been here long, and likely will not stay long either, but take a moment to look at everything that we have built together. Every year, the galaxy tears itself a part and yet, here we stand. We are no longer a handful of lonely outcasts trying to fix the worlds that we have lost, but hundreds, soon to be thousands of people, united not in blood, not in family, but in our struggle, in our determination to survive. I have been given the responsibility to lead us into this new tomorrow, and I promise to not any of you down. For the Brotherhood!”
“For the Brotherhood!” The crowd erupted into cheers, hundreds of people, all inspired by Barry’s words. He looked across the crowd, who not half a year ago had been struggling in the gutter of the galaxy, who now had a place to call home, a people to call family.
Barry would never forget their faces.
