1.1 - The Forced Hand
"What do you think that was?" Kirin asked his cousin as he sipped some noodles,
Kirk merely replied with a shrug as he nibbled on a sandwich, "We can cross out hallucination, do you really think it was a message left from the Elder Race?"
"Probably, I mean that seems like the only plausible answer to whatever is going on."
"Your probably right, but that doesn't explain that scream I heard." Kirk recalled,
"I know, sounded like a girl."
They continued eating in silence as their drifted to their own thoughts. Kirk once more thought about that dream he had a few days ago, he was pretty sure he saw that figure in his dream. Though Kirin's mind drifted to something else.
He was worried. Well he should be, he had to temporarily leave the resistance in Calamari County ever since the attack, but he was even more worried about Kirk.
Kirk was younger than Kirin but here he was managing a continent wide rebellion, back when they we're children Kirk had trouble organising his damn school papers. He was scared that this might break Kirk, he knew about his old friends and his experiences during the war. He didn't want to lose his cousin.
Kirin took a deep breath and closed his eyes. Kirk was an adult now, he didn't need to be supervised in every aspect, he can make decisions for himself. Kirk finished eating as he glanced at his watch and looked up to Kirin
"So Kirin I've got to go right now, a meeting is being called." Kirk said standing up,
"Meeting? With who?" Kirin asked, though he knew with who.
"Classified. Sorry." Kirk said walking away, Kirin shrugged then stood up to walk away.
As Kirk walked away he heard a clashing sound behind him, looking back he found Kirin on the floor with another Inkling he had bumped into. He realised the inkling Kirin had bumped into was Selka, from the refugee network.
"Hey could you at least watch where your going?" Selka said as she picked up her plate,
"I was! Though it seems you weren't." Kirin shot back as he sat back up, he picked up a book Selka had dropped and ed it to her. "Here."
"Oh, thanks." Selka said as she took the book from him,
Kirk walked away as he saw the two and felt that they we're going to meet each other again very soon.
Kirk walked down the hallway of the base, guards and soldiers pouring across the hallways, most didn't notice him as they we're busy on their personal lives while those who did saluted.
Kirk reached the end of the hallway and walked up to two tall wooden doors, like something out of a court drama movie, his hands moved to push it open.
The doors swung open to reveal a small chamber with a desk for three people, there two people we're waiting inside, Karumi and Sheldon on a tv screen. They turned to look for him.
"Ah, you're finally here." Karumi said as Kirk closed the doors,
"Hey, I have to eat." Kirk said, "So, is everyone in place?"
Karumi nodded, they all turned to the screen housing Sheldon in the middle of the room as Sheldon booted something up.
A few more TV's emerged as the static quickly faded out, on the screens of the TV's were multiple Inklings and Octarians in different environments. These we're the rest of the leaders.
At the left was Jack and Owen, the detective team from earlier. The two were placed in charge of the resistance cell in Inkopolis. They fought with Kirk and they were good at it.
After the war they continued working as private investigators until the Sanitized arrived. They went underground and started their own resistance cell against Tartar. They're in charge of the cell in Inkopolis and it's surrounding areas.
Next to the two was a female Octoling with a bored look who had a pony tail. She was Yako Maroon, while not necessarily a major leader, she was in charge of the forces raiding supply trains and attacking major outposts. They were essentially the Mariners of the resistance.
Yako believe it or not was actually childish and kind before all this happened, when she heard about the death of her sister she snapped. She distinguished herself with the number of Inklings she killed in revenge, but after it was revealed that Octavio had plans for invading Octoburg and had a hand in her sister's death, she went with Karumi and ed Kirk's Detachment. After the war she continued to serve under the Guardian Corps as a Sergeant until Tartar emerged. She recruited as many Octarians as she could and emigrated to the outskirts, there she continued fighting.
The next one was another Octoling who had glasses, he was known as Matthew. A former scientist, he studied and developed weapons for the Octarians during most of the war. His loyalty lied with Octorus thank cod. He actually has an Inkling daughter by the name of Lucy, Kirk never knew how this happened and he never asked.
After the war he continued working as a scientist until the Sanitised invaded, he ran with Lucy and moved to the outer islands. There he linked up with some Inklings and Octolings and set up outposts for refugees. Matthew is in charge of the refugees colonies.
The next one was an Inkling who appeared to have purple tentacles, he thought. She held a stern look. This was Iris, former trainer of Camp Triggerfish.
Not much is actually known about her to be honest, all they knew was that one day she appeared to the resistance with the promise of training recruits. She whipped all units into combat shape through drills and exercises, she is in charge of training the recruits.
The most notable one of them all however was an aged Octoling who held a calm look. This was former Emperor Octorus, that's right. We all know what he did during the war.
Emperor Octorus used to rule the Octarians Empire back then, he was a pretty chill leader but he knew when to put his foot down. After the war he continued to rule but fell as Tartar's troops invaded Octoburg. Octorus then evacuated with most of his staff into the valleys and set up efforts to take back. He is in charge of the cell near Octoburg and the surrounding domes.
Karumi here is in charge of the cell near Calamari County and the rural areas while Sheldon was in charge of the scientific department of the resistance.
Kirk over here is the person who brought them all together, he explored the entire continent to link up with as many cells as he could to merge together. Due to this Kirk was in charge of the intelligence efforts, he would basically recruit, scout, kill, the likes.
"Sheldon! I see you have recovered from that blast explosion from your lab three days ago." Octorus commented as he peered closer to the screen,
'This feels like an old man on video call.' Kirk silently thought as Jack coughed to get their attention.
"Hello! Super important meeting going on right now." Jack explained as Yako looked like she wanted to doze of into sleep,
"Let's get this over with already, I got recruits to train." Iris said with irritation,
"Alright, as you may have heard Kirk over here had discovered a device down in a human bunker that had a very notable reaction." Sheldon said,
"It blew him like a paper weight." Yako spoke,
"Yes. Anyway this meeting has been called to discuss efforts and notes related to this device. Are we all good?" Sheldon continued.
The council gave some sort of agreement to this as Sheldon began speaking, this was going to be a long day.
===
"This place is so cool!" Yako exclaimed as her team explored deeper into the abandoned facility, how did no one discover this already?
"Hold on!" Tanner yelled, he didn't want to be left alone in the cold hallways, it was very frightening. Not like he was a wuss or anything, but any sane man would piss their pants if something appeared here.
Behind them was the rest of the expedition unit, Otis had been arguing with a researcher due to the fact he wanted to explore further, whereas Otis wanted to set up a camp and call HQ before going deeper.
"This is why nobody likes you Tanner! Your too boring!" Yako insulted as she pulled out a flashlight and peered into a room,
"Hey I should have you know the ladies would beg to differ!" Tanner rebutted as the rest of the team caught up.
Inside the dark room Yako had peered into lay an old office, one side the desks and a hallway to the right, housing the bathrooms . Yako ran in and began opening the desks to find something really interesting, Tanner had walked to one if the cubicles and began pressing a keyboard while the rest dispersed to do their own thing.
"Ma'am I really think we should call it in!" Otis explained as Yako pulled out an old binder,
"We will. After a few more hours." Yako replied as she began reading it, she took a few English classes to better understand the Elder Race language. While not perfect she could understand basic English.
Otis sighed and gave in to the curiosity as he walked down the hallways to the bathroom. He peered into the males bathroom and found nothing interesting at all! Mumbling about the terrible architecture, he turned back to the office.
On his way he spotted a map of what appeared to be the building's layout, he look at it with intrigue and pulled it off the wall as he inspected it.
"Doctor Tanner?" He yelled down the hall,
Tanner arrived with a studied look as he read a dirty magazine he had found.
"Yes?"
"What are you?" Otis said before stopping, "Nevermind. Could you please read this?"
Tanner placed the magazine near a table and grabbed the map and began studying it,
"All right we're in one of the cubicles. That's the storage closet, break room, and- Ah! It says here the laboratory is nearby." Tanner said as he gave it back to Otis.
"Did someone say lab?" Yako asked,
"What are we waiting for? Let's head straight there." A researcher demanded as everyone voiced their agreements,
"Sure why not." Tanner said as he walked out the door,
The team continued exploring the hallway to the lab, stopping sometimes to peer into more rooms. After a few minutes of walking they arrived to what seems to be the lab. Yako kicked open the door as they went in, a few researchers cursed at Yako's disrespect for the history as they walked in.
It seemed like a normal laboratory, with tables littered with flasks across the room. There we're microscopes and scientific equipment in here, but they appeared to be still functioning.
"Sweet!" Tanner said as he went to one of the scientific instruments, "More working equipment, this will help with the budget."
The rest of the researchers agreed as Otis strolled to what looks like a window pane, he leaned forward and his eyes widened.
"Hey is this equipment normal?" He asked as the rest of the team peered in,
The window led to what looks like a test chamber, inside was a line of yellow tape with precautions. Instruments and s connected to a large device in the middle, it looked like a cylinder that automatically opened.
"I think not." A researcher said as they continued staring at it,
"What is that?" One of the guards said as Yako leaned closer,
"I see a doorway right there!" Yako said,
Otis pulled out the map and gave it to Tanner who immediately plotted a route,
"I know the way, follow me!" Tanner said, but was stopped by Otis putting his hand on his chest.
"Hold that thought." He said as he turned to Yako.
"I think it's time to call this in ma'am." Otis explained to his leader who sighed,
"Fine. Wait for me while I radio it in." Yako said as she walked the hallways,
"Yes ma'am." Otis said as Yako walked out the door,
"That's new, I've known her for a long time and she usually does not like exploring without compan- what are you doing?" Tanner started but asked as he saw Otis look at his watch,
"3, 2, 1..." Otis said before Yako went back,
"Hey maybe we should go in pairs. Otis, with me." Yako demanded,
"Yes ma'am." Otis tiredly said as he accompanied Yako,
Tanner shook his head and mused to himself, "Otis acts like a cynical version of Otome."
As he quieted down and waited for them to come back, he turned to a female guard who was studying the test chamber below. He combed his tentacles and walked up to her confidently.
"Hey beautiful." He said with a cheeky grin,
Her eyes squinted as she held up a finger to his mouth,
"So you like play-"
"What the fuck is that?" The guard said as Tanner turned to see what she was looking at,
The test chamber started slowly emitting a blueish light, everyone in the observation deck looked at it in awe.
"Woah, what the hell is that?" Tanner asked as he heard chatter,
"Pipe down will you?" He said to a fellow researcher,
"What? I'm not talking." She said, the others quickly confirmed none of them we're talking.
"Then where is that coming from?" He asked, thought the chamber answered,
A large noise sounded as they snapped their heads to it, inside where bluish figures that appeared see through, like holograms in a film. They appeared to be saying things as the machine in the middle activated.
"I think we should go. Now!" Tanner said, as Yako and Otis quickly returned.
"What the heck is that?!" Yako screamed as they saw a hologram of the device turn on as it beeped lights, "Unit get ready for combat."
The unit pulled out their weapons as the machine started getting louder,
"Why are there ghosts?" Yako asked as she saw the holograms of people working,
"I think those are human hologram- wait." The female guard said but quickly had a panicked look,
"Are those Oceanics?"
"Oh cod your right!" Otis said as he could see Inklings and Octolings working in the room below,
The hologram of the machine started powering up with a large blue beam, the unit prepared to run but a wire of the hologram snapped causing an alert to play.
The Oceanics in the chamber started yelling as the machine appeared short circuiting and made popping noise, and just as it had appeared it quickly faded out.
The unit just stared at what they just saw, none could find words to what they witnessed.
"Otis call HQ again." Yako said with a serious face,
"This is priority number one!"
===
Octoburg Palace was the home of the original Octarian family who ruled for well over a few centuries, but ever since the Battle of The Second Turf War the Octarian family lineage had died off.
Reforms had been put in place to slowly turn the Octarian Empire into a Republic, but before that could happen a temporary leader would be needed, and she was currently stressing in the main office of the palace.
Otome had been filing paperwork nonstop for the past 72 hours, she had been running purely on energy drinks and coffee. She had thought the influx of paperwork would have stopped after a few months but it just kept coming!
"I have found another reason to respect Emperor Octorus." Otome declared as she tossed a paper into a folder,
She, along with the rest of the Octarians had missed the Emperor. But there was nothing they could do about it now.
Otome sighed as she took a quick break and reflected on the past years, it had been four years since that battle but it still felt like yesterday when she took a pledge to run the Empire until it could stabilise. Tensions between races, assassinations and coups have taken place in those past years. Yet here is still stood, a testament to the will of the Octarians.
She thought back to old friends. Callie and Marie of the squid sisters, who along the first Squidbeak agents we're the first Inkling friends she had ever made. She ed their hijinks together, their plans to save the world too.
Her thought then drifted to a certain human male who had saved her life during that fateful meeting, Drake von Kaufmann. Her first love.
They had spent so much time together, it seemed perfect. But in the end, they had to break up to focus on stopping Octarias back then. And Otome never had the time to properly reconnect with him due to her being temporary Empress.
She sighed and crumbled a piece of draft paper and threw it in a trash can nearby, a trick to past the time past on by the Elder Race.
She wondered which part of the year she was free to visit Drake again, but a knocking on the door erupted her from thought.
"Come in." Otome said,
She was half expecting her secretary, but who came in instead was an intelligence officer who bowed.
'Strange.' She thought, "At ease, what seems to be the problem?"
"Ma'am, do you the expedition to the Outer Islands which contained your sister?" He spoke,
Otome's eyes widened as she stared at the man,
"Yako? Why? Is she okay?" Otome worried, she knew she shouldn't have let her sister on that trip,
"Uh, Lieutenant Yako is fine, my Empress." The officer said, "It's just they discovered something, something very noteworthy."
He proceeded to place a file on her table,
"This file contains a transcript of a radio call she had made. Please read it." He said as he bowed again,
Otome raised an eyebrow as she opened the folder and pulled out a transcript:
——
[This transcript had been recorded this day, these would usually take a few days but the call was very noteworthy as to warrant an early transcript. This is Lieutenant Yako Maroon's report on a facility they found.]
[The sound of a radio being turned on as Captain Oriana Kamra of the Intelligence Department responded]
Oriana Kamra: This is HQ, please identif-
Yako Maroon: HQ this is Yako Maroon we just made a VERY interesting discovery!
Oriana Kamra: Okay please identify you-
Yako Maroon: This Is Yako Maroon of Unit 43, assisting the Scientific Department in Expedition 14-C and we found a flipping human facility!
Oriana Kamra: Okay, Lieutenant you mentioned facility. Please describe it.
Yako Maroon: Okay ummm.....
[The sound of Yako Maroon looking back is heard as a groan is heard in the background.]
Yako Maroon: It's like the E.C.S Bunker but.......cooler.
Oriana Kamra: Please give a better description Lieutenant Yako.
Yako Maroon: Okay, uh. I-It's like fifty feet tall and has a rocket next to it. We found it hidden in an island, the signs says Technodyne- oh and there's this cool chamber with this weird cylinder.
Oriana Kamra: Chamber?
Yako Maroon: Yup, it looked like a testing ground and-
[The sound of echoed beeping arose from the radio.]
Yako Maroon: What the? HQ please hold.
[At this point the Lieutenant Yako Maroon hangs up as an estimated twenty minutes .]
Yako Maroon: HQ this is Lieutenant Yako Maroon over.
Oriana Kamra: Copy Lieutenant, what was that just the-
Yako Maroon: A human research facility has FUCKING-
[The sounds of gasp erupt from the Control Room]
Yako Maroon: Oceanics working in it! They we're testing something, holograms were spotted with Oceanics in it. It is
worth noting that there appears to be NO record of Oceanics working in this facility. The cylinder in the test chamber activated, they were testing something here. I am formally requesting another expedition unit to assist and to set camp here. Coordinates have been sent encrypted via proxy on airship to your department, over.
Oriana Kamra: Copy that, is there anything else?
Yako Maroon: We are low on rations! Bring pizza-
[The sound of footsteps running echo through the radio as the radio sounds to be snatched by an Octoling recorded to be Private Otis Nivera, Lieutenant Yako Maroon threw several profanities while Private Nivera scolded the Octoling fir misuse of military communication.]
[At this point the connection cuts off, several military units and researcher teams had been sent to assist the expedition team in further study.]
——
As Otome finished reading the transcript, she looked at the Officer in the eye.
"You are dismissed." She stated, though she had a worried tone to her voice, the officer bowed and ran out the room.
As Otome thought of the transcript, multiple things came to mind. One of which is:
'Since when did Yako swear?' She asked herself.

"So pertaining to the device, what have we learned?" Sheldon asked his fellows as they stared blankly at their respective screens before speaking,
"Stop acting like a teacher and get to the point!" Jack snapped, Owen had left the meeting to fetch a cup of coffee,
"Hey now, I think Sheldon did an excellent job at explaining this device." Octorus defended as Yako repeatedly slammed her head on the desk.
"Boring!" Yako shouted as Matthew sighed into his hands,
"Don't talk to a fellow like that!" Iris scolded to Yako who rolled her eyes,
"Can it Barney." Yako said while Jack groaned in the background,
"For the last time, WHO IS BARNEY?!" Jack yelled causing the meeting the descend into insults from one another while the rest awkwardly watched.
Karumi wasn't affected as she stopped listening the moment Jack snapped at Sheldon, she turned to see Kirk staring at the scene with a twitching eye. A vein could be seen bulging on his head.
"Hey you okay?" She asked,
Kirk took a deep breath and shouted to get everyone's attention.
"Can we have a SINGLE PRODUCTIVE MEETING THAT DOESN'T DESCEND INTO A BATTLE ROYALE?!" Kirk snapped, everyone who had been arguing stopped and turned to the Inkling.
"No." Yako bluntly stated, causing Kirk to groan into his hands,
"Well this total meeting was a waste of my time. Sheldon, care to close it?" Iris said, while Sheldon signed.
"I suppose so, a few more thing though." Sheldon said,
"The device is interesting due to the fact I'm pretty sure the Sanitised had been using it before and-" Sheldon started to which Karumi cut him off,
"What did you just say?" Karumi asked, to which Sheldon repeated himself,
Everyone stared blankly at the screen before Yako yelled,
"Why didn't you say that at the START?!" Yako yelled,
"I did! At least I think I did." Sheldon said while everyone groaned,
"What happened?" Owen said as he returned to the camera,
"Forget it. Sheldon what do you mean by the Sanitised using it before?" Octorus asked, not fazed by the fact they wasted two hours in a meeting in which Sheldon never had disclosed the most important tidbit yet.
" when your forces raided that dome the Sanitised were using to experiment on something? And the fact they destroyed it before you could reach it?" Sheldon said to Octorus who nodded,
"Some of your men brought it back to me and I have it laying around my lab. I split open the parts of the device and checked with the ones the Sanitised destroyed, they seemed to be of the same nature." Sheldon finished,
"What do you think it is anyway?" Iris said, finally interested in the meeting,
"Due to the fact the device blew up before any proper tests could be made, I can't be certain. All I know is the hologram the device projected seemed to react to Kirk being there."
"Wait really?" Kirk asked,
"Yes, you told me it locked eyes with you. And afterwards it turned to the device, at the same time the device started beeping."
"Why didn't I thought of that?" Kirk asked,
"You hit your head pretty hard." Sheldon clarified,
"So the device has the same properties as the ones the Sanitised appeared to be testing and it reacted to Kirk being there? Just what is this thing?" Matthew asked,
"I still don't know, but that leads to another one of the factors to why I called this meeting." Sheldon said as he turned to look at Kirk,
"The Sanitized are evolving, their tactics are becoming more better while we start losing more numbers." Sheldon said,
This was true based on the attack on Camp Alpha. They knew what battle to do to shut down the entire network. It was also true they were starting to lose more people.
"The Santized appear to have an interest in this device, if we can develop it before they do we have an edge against them." Sheldon continued,
"A special team needs to be made to continue this investigation." Sheldon finished,
"I can spare some men." Octorus said,
"Same." Yako said,
Pretty soon everyone in the council voice their agreement.
"Good! Why don't you fax their filed to Kirk over here." Sheldon said while Kirk's eyes widened,
"Woah! Why me?" Kirk said a bit fearful of the paperwork that is to come.
"Because you will be leading this team Kirk!" Sheldon asked,
"Again, why me?" Kirk asked while everyone rose an eyebrow at Sheldon.
"Kirk, it will be a while before you can recruit people due to the shut down, and scouting is going to be dangerous for a while. I have thus concluded this is the best use of resources." Sheldon explained,
"Kirk, Squidbeak needs to return."
Kirk just stared at Sheldon, he already agreed with Sheldon halfway through his explanation, though one question remained,
"Why does it have to be named Squidbeak?" Kirk asked, he had no problem with the name apart from the usual nightmares. And the pain of losing his old friends.
"Morale of course! It will boost our soldier's confidence to fight when they hear Squidbeak is back, even if it is just to research a weapon."
"Understandable." Kirk sighed,
"So I assume that's all?" Matthew asked,
"Yes! If you still want to discuss something the meeting will still-"
Almost everyone in the meeting had logged off, the only ones left being Octorus since he found it quite rude to leave without a farewell while Kirk and Karumi were still there. Octorus said his goodbye and logged of immediately.
"Is there anything you want to say to Kirk before we leave?" Karumi asked,
"Yes! I have a special box just for this occasion! Along with the fax you will be receiving the box too! That will be all see you later!" Sheldon added before he logged off.
Kirk said a farewell to Karumi as he walked out the office, his mind drifted to thoughts pertaining to Squidbeak. One thought pestered at him the most however.
"Am I Agent 5? Or Captain?"
The New Squidbeak Splatoon was back.

It had been the day after the discovery of the station, Manfred was currently in the laboratory of E.C.S, every since the incident his teleportation device he had spent almost all of his free time trying to unravel what the hell happened.
He was currently studying blueprints of the old device when the T.V which was on the news reported another archeological discovery.
He was gonna pay the news story no mind, he just turned it on for background sounds, but the moment he heard the Inkling pronounce Technodyne Research Facility he stopped, grabbed an autotran what he was doing and turned to the screen.
"The abandoned research facility is under heavy lockdown by the Octarian Army since yesterday." The reporter started, "The official response was to make sure no terrorists get their hands on old research devices, but rumours circulate of something much more being protected."
"The rumours state a cylindrical machine in the deep crevices of the facility mysteriously turned itself on, and fragments of old recordings state that Oceanics used to work here."
Manfred thought of the description given by the reporter, he grabbed another blueprint and compared it's description. He shivered as he realised it was what the researcher was describing.
The machine the reporter described was an old project he worked on during his time at Technodyne, along with Tartar. The machine was the same particle displacement module he had rediscovered but on a larger scale. It was originally meant to transport heavy duty cargo across worlds, but with the proper materials it could be made into something more interesting.
An inter-dimensional teleporter.
Across the continent, most Oceanics paid no mind to the report but once they heard rumours they all snapped to the screen. Most would have an outcome to what will happen to it.
Three Tenta-Terrors thought this would be a great time to make an attack.
A certain pink Inkling thought this would make a great movie.
A glasses wearing Octoling prepared to be shipped to the facility.
Two Idols had curious looks.
And a brown haired human thought of his father's employment to it.
===
Kirk had opened the box Sheldon had sent him. While nothing special, mostly contains manuscripts about Squidbeak's tactics. A hat got his attention.
It appeared to be a blue officer cap with a gold symbol etched on it's front with white stripes, a normal Inkling would assume it was any normal officer cap. But Kirk knew what this was.
The squid and bamboo symbols we're a dead giveaway, it was Cuttlfish's old cap.
Trembling a bit, he studied it and found to be a replica, a note attached to it read the following.
P.S: Thought I'd get you the old cap to get you in the spirit of Squidbeak! You'll have to abandoned Agent 5 though, but I'm sure you'll find a loop hole.
Kirk sighed as he once again stared at the cap, the cap that had given him so much and took from him the same amount. The same cap that gave him his friends and took them away with much more.
Kirk took a deep breath and put it in, he had made peace with his demons already.
He grabbed a mirror and looked at himself, he looked nice.
While he was prepared to assume the role of Captain, he didn't want to lose the term Agent 5. So he cane with a compromise.
"Captain Fives." Kirk spoke as he stared himself in the mirror.
Agent Five was reborn.
