Shiver is Pretty Cool, Actually! - Character Analysis(?)

So, Shiver’s team won yet another Splatfest! And with every Shiver win comes a massive wave of Shiver hate. It’s super exhausting to see, and it sucks a lot of the fun out of Splatfests. I love Deep Cut a LOT, and seeing how people treat the three of them in of Splatfests really breaks my heart.

This time, I want to do something to combat all of the negativity, and I encourage you guys to do the same! Even if it’s not about Shiver in specific, I think we could all use some more positive posts after that fest.

I’ve prepared a mini essay(?) which debunks certain beliefs that people have about Shiver, while also sharing a couple of positive things about her and her personality that I ire. It’ll be kind of a character analysis, I suppose!

Here goes!

So, a reason that I tend to see people cite for hating Shiver is that she’s “arrogant, smug, self-absorbed, cocky, etc”. That simply isn’t true, not entirely at least. While she does act that way, for the most part, that’s exactly what it is. An ACT.

Behind that behind that whole cool and confident act, Shiver is actually a massive dweeb. An absolute goober. A certified silly goose. Like, look at this dork:

There’s a couple of examples of this in game, but that particular cutscene is my personal favorite lmaooo she’s a mess — of course, I mean this all in the most affectionate way possible! I personally find this part of her to be incredibly endearing, she just wants to be seen as cool all the time. 🥺

Some people seem to think that Shiver doesn’t care about Frye and Big Man, which is just… huh? To this, I raise the FrostyFest announcement dialogue:

Shiver was secretly planning an outing for all three of them! She wanted nothing more than to spend the holidays with her friends! Doesn’t seem very “self-absorbed” now does it? I could share many more examples of this, but the point is that Shiver absolutely does care about the other two. Deep Cut has a special bond between them, and they’re a very tight knit group. While they do have their quarrels/like to tease each other (as any friend group would), they clearly care for each other a lot. They don’t hate each other, and they most certainly wouldn’t end their friendship over something so trivial as Splatfest.

Also, I’d like to take a moment to note this since it’s been a problem in the fandom since the very beginning: it makes zero sense to hate one member of an idol group while loving the other(s)! If somebody was to tell an idol that they loved them but hated their partner, the idol in question would probably punch them. They all care about each other a lot, and no idol group would be the same if one of them were missing!

I’m sure there’s a LOT more I could say about Shiver, but I think I’ve gotten my main points across, so I’ll wrap this post up here! Sorry if this post is a mess/seems too ranty/I sound snappy in it, I’m just so tired of seeing all of the Shiver slander every time she wins a Splatfest. She’s a very cool character with a lot of depth and layers to her personality, and it sucks that some people can’t see that/refuse to see it out of distaste for her winning so many Splatfests.

I ask that you please don’t comment with something like “lol Shiver bad” even as a joke, I’m really not in the mood for it and don’t want there to be any drama/fights. I’ve got a block button and I’m not afraid to use it! If you want to have a respectful discussion about it then that’s fine.

Also, should I do more of these character analysis thingies? I dunno if they’d be interesting to you all or not but I think I’d have fun with them! It could be nice to share my thoughts on characters/how I interpret them and maybe debunk some common misconceptions that the fandom has about them! (COUGH COUGH DJ OCTAVIO AND THE OCTARIANS IN GENERAL OHHH I COULD GO ON FOR HOURS ABOUT THEM)
