Forging a Duo Chapter 16 - Evolution

Once the light faded, Sunshine had…changed. Rather than a small, bronze and fluffy Eevee, Sunshine was 3 times her original height, her fur was a thistle colour, her tail wasn’t big and fluffy, but rather was thin, splitting into 2 sections at the tip. Finally, she had a red gem on her forehead which was glowing a fierce red. From what my Pokédex says, she evolved into an Espeon.

“Incredible” Averon exclaimed in awe. “I’ve never seen an Eevee evolve into an Espeon so early into an adventure.”

Averon’s reaction was all we needed to hear. He wasn’t prepared for something like this and we had the advantage. He sent out his third Pokémon which was a Zigzagoon.

His Eevee Tackled Sunshine which took her down to a little over a third. We figured his Eevee would use Helping Hand, then his Zigzagoon would attack as it’s faster. Nova had Sunshine use Confusion on the Zigzagoon and I had Theo Tackle his Eevee.

We were wrong as his Zigzagoon was the one to use Helping Hand. His Eevee attacked Sunshine and took her down to a sliver of health. Thankfully Sunshine one-shot his Zigzagoon and Theo got another hit on his Eevee. We were amazed at her power and knew this was over. Sunshine dealt one last blow to Averon’s Eevee and knocked it out.

I practically jumped with joy while Nova waved as the crowd went wild.

“Congratulations young trainers!” Applauded Averon. “Your spectacular performance and strong bond with your Pokémon have won your first gym battle.”

Averon waved over Reshi who was carrying two badges. She handed them to Averon and left. “As leader of the normal gym, I present you with the binding badge!

Let this proof of victory bind your relationship with your Pokémon and let you face the next gym.”

I accepted my badge and decided to strike a victory pose with it, listening to the roaring of the crowd.

After the battle, we went to Averon’s office to talk in private. The office was… plain to say the least. There was a large desk with a computer and neatly stacked papers on top, a few chairs in front of it. Finally, there was a wall of filing cabinets behind him with a small plant on the one behind him. We were lounging in the chairs while Averon did some paperwork.

“That battle was a treat to witness,” he said while staring at his work. “You still have much to learn but I think you’re on the right track. I can already tell you’ll make fantastic trainers given how much your starters like you.”

“It was shocking. But we would have never won that battle if she didn’t evolve.” Nova said while petting Sunshine on the head. I felt Theo shaking and I noticed he seemed nervous, so I gave him a scratch behind the ear to try and calm him.

“You remind me of your father Nova. He also developed a fantastic bond with his Pokémon. It’s like he could speak to them.”

Nova grinned at the comment. “I know he formed a strong bond but he definitely cannot understand Pokémon.”

“It would be cool though,” I mentioned.

For what felt like hours, we caught up about how eventful our adventure has been so far. It was nice to talk to him face to face while actually knowing who he was. I had spoken to him before when I was younger, but only on the phone. He would often ask me about Audrey’s interests other than work and things she liked. I found it odd but told him how dull her life was and every time he sighed, wishing he could get her to properly notice him. Typical Audrey, she has her nose so deep in work, she doesn’t socialize with anyone. I’m amazed that Averon still works with her given she’s too preoccupied to notice why he sticks around.

While he explained where our journey would take us next, he noticed the time and nearly fell over as he tried to leap out of his chair.

“Great scott, look at the time! I’m supposed to be helping Audrey set up to run experiments on what the full moon does to Umbreon’s abilities.”

“I’m sure she didn’t realise you hadn’t shown up yet. But she will when she asks for your help.” I stated. “Maybe this time she’ll notice your ‘hints’,” I emphasised while winking

He replied saying he hoped so and hurried out with his jacket and briefcase.

After he ran out, we started to grab our things to leave when Nova started teasing and pressuring me for information on my comment. “Sooo, what was that about?”

“I’ll tell you if he’s ok with it. But don’t expect to find out anytime soon.”

She looked disappointed but understood given it was a secret. After getting our things, we left to find a hotel. We found one with decent ratings and managed to get a room on the highest level with a balcony to overlook the town. As soon as I got in the room, I jumped on my bed and…well I don’t know what happened after that, Nova said I ed out immediately so she made sure I was comfortable before going to bed herself. However, neither of us realized the events that would transpire between Sunshine and Theo that night…
