Finally reached the end of this mini series covering our beloved idols as Elite Four . I had a lot of fun covering them, and maybe I'll cover Cuttlefish as a champion. But that's not what this blog is about, this blog is about Marina as a Psychic type specialist who also has a double battle just like Pearl who I covered in my previous blog.
Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoy.
Marina's room
Marina's room will have a cyberpunk, neon aesthetique which kind of serves as a reference to the Octo Expansion. She's busy on her laptop until you enter, which will startle her a bit. She apologizes for her reaction, as she explains that not many trainers make it this far ... and that she wilm try her best to stop you, starting the battle.
Her Pokémon
Just like with Pearl, I am covering her Pokémon in favorable pairs.
Indeede (male) and Espeon: Marina is really smart, we all know that, so that's why I assume she'd come up with some neat battle tactics. That's why I gave her an Indeedee having Psychic Surge as its ability while also holding a terrain extender, which will cause Psychic terrain to kick in for 8 full turns. This boosts not only used Psychic type moves, but prevents increased priority as a result of an ability like Prankster (which is an ability commonly seen with Dark and Ghost types, who are strong against Psychic type). I chose a male Indeedee to be more offensive (and therefore more beneficial within psychic terrain). I added an Espeon here because its relatively fast and a really good special attacker. This is also a callback to Pearl having a Jolteon.
Alakazam and Hatterene: Alakazam is seen by most Pokémon players as the smartest Pokémon ever and for good reason if you look at its Pokédex. So giving it to someon like Marina is really fitting. If psychic terrain is still in effect, Alakazam will hit really hard (it kind of serves as a glasscanon). But the first thing Alakazam will do, is set up a Trick Room. Trick Room inverts the speed stats: slow Pokémon will be able to attack before faster ones. This is excellent since the rest of this team (except for Espeon, who should've been fainted at this point) is slow, especially Hatterene with a speed stat of only 29. Getting rid of that problem is going to make the fight against this gen 8 Pokémon 'Tricky' (see what I did there?). I should also mention Hatterene is part fairy, which is good against possible dark types.
Malamar and (G-max) Orbeetle: The final duo, consisting of 2 other Pokémon which suit Marina really well. Malamar is also an intelligent Pokémon based on a squid. Marina is an octoling, but both are based of cephalopods so it's close enough imo. Malamar is also part dark, which similar to Callie's Grimmsnarl, serves as a reference to her octarian past which she isn't proud about. Dark also helps against possible ghost type opponents. Orbeetle is here because of its intelligence too, but it will also be Marina's gigantamax Pokémon. Regular Dynamax is better on Orbeetle, but since its Gigantamax form looks like an UFO, I wanted to go with that as it is a reference to the Octarians using UFO-like ships (when they abducted the great Zapfish for example).
Aftermath
Marina will applaud you on your win and wish you good luck on taking on the Champion.
