Why do some players main more than two characters?

Hello toasters from all over the world, It's me Cr3misis ( Error 404, Sentence not found ), and today I'm gonna talk about a topic that no one has ever talked before.

So, you made your strategy to apply in tournaments. You think that the strategy you devoped in that moment is undefeatable and you predicted every possible situation that can happen to you in bracket.

You're ready to apply it.

But after you went to a lot of tournaments, using the same strategy and getting a lot of success, in all of a sudden you got defeated.

You say:" Hmm, I see what I did wrong in that match. Next time I'll encounter him in bracket again, It will be the moment I'll defeat him".

But then you got defeated again, even if you tried to change what you did wrong last time.

So you go to the next tournament, but encounter him again and got defeated again.

And again

And again

And again until you realise something: there's somebody that knows how to counter your strategy.

"So... What now?"

That's where they arrive...

1) Why you use them

So you might be wondering : "Why do I have to use a pocket?" or "Why them and not a secondary?".

You may think about this stuff:

Like I said in the beginning of this blog, if you want to vary your strategy in order to not get defeated by the same dude over and over, that's a good way to start taking a pocket.

You want to counter some really hard MUs that your main and your secondary can't counter together.

You want to have more options to those moments in a set when, even if you don't always lose to the opponent you are facing right now, he still knows how to deal with you thanks to his high adaptation ability and you don't feel to go with your main and secondary.

2) The best ones

But before we continue with this blog, I'm gonna tell you what the best secondaries/pockets are in my opinion.

Cloud

This character has to be in this list. It's the type of character that you can do everything with: Godlike frame data, Disted hitboxes, Limit and much more. He basically gets rewarded for knowing the basics of the game.

Kirby

Kirby is an all rounded character that can be useful in many occasions and It's your guy if:

- You like combos​ and recking damage almost endlessly

- You want to counter projectile based character like Mega Man, thanks to his crouch.

- Gimp people and kill them at 0% :smirk:

Pit and Mario

The complete package. They're great all rounded characters that can help you in every possible situation. They can fit to every main, even if it's low-tier ( like in my case ) and can help you with a lot of bad matchups.

3) How to use them properly

Once you chose what is in your opinion the best pocket for you, it's time to put it into work.

Think of them as one of your main/s and try to learn everything that you have to learn to make him as your main: combos, advanced techniques, setups etc.

Try ask other players who mains your pocket some tips to improve the character and , if that is possible , even some dittos or regular matches with that character that you have difficulty to play against with your main so that you can train your pocket with those matchups.

Also try to watch as many montages, guides videos of your pockets and pro player matches on YouTube as much as you can.

4) Be the complete opposite of what you are

You might say at this point:

"But all you have to do, is to do what you did with your main and that's it".

"What if your opponent starts to make an idea on how your pocket works based on my main knowledge?".

"Or even worse, starts to counter your pocket basing on what's your worst mu with your main and your secondary?"

At this point it's time to think of what you can do to overcome those situations. And what can you actually do? You may have red the title of this part of the blog and it may sound obvious but... let me explain for a sec about what I mean when I'm talking to be "the complete opposite of what you are".

Let's make an example:

Even if you are recovering as Ness, who has a really gimpable and ( most of the times ) predictable recovery, you can still find some creative ways to recover to the ledge without your opponent taking out your up-b and kill you at low %.

I did this example because even the most linear character has many different ways to be played. So, if you know that your opponent knows how to play your main and what will he do to counter his main basing to your playstyle, try to do the opposite of what you normally do.

For example if your playstyle is conservative, try some risky options to take stocks.

That's what I'm trying to say. Try to break those schemes you have in your head and your opponent will panic in no time. Also you'll notice that you're taking a really big advantage. If you want an example of the advantage I'm talking about, try to focus on the 2nd and third match of this set.
