Today I’m here to educate the masses on my son. Why is he important you might ask? “Why are you important?”, I would theoretically respond. My son has rescued tens of hundreds of children from burning buildings, cured coronavirus in the parallel universe, burned down America in said universe, and did layers on layers of other helpful bullshit. He’s sured humanity in every way possible. Needless to say, I introduce you to god incarnate.

#TwilightWings for the culture.

The Transition

Brawl Fox hit a new low in the Smash Bros Fox timeline. For Fox standards at least. Fox’s fall from grace from Melee was definitely simmering special, something special that wasn’t very permanent thankfully. Buffs ahoy when Smash 4 rolled in; tilts, smashes, specials all got sauced the hell up. Top all that with a brand new engine that screams Fox and you’ve rebirthed a beautiful mess of a character.
And then you gotta peep those alts like damn !!!!! They really love this dude!!! !!

All hits no misses

The Neutral

Fox is what you call in Smash 4 “a mash master”. A lovable masher, but still a masher at heart. Fast frame data? Check. Amazing burst speed? Check. Insane movement? Top it all off. He typically either wants to either stay in mid range to whiff punish or close range to put nonstop pressure on whoever he’s up against.

Perfect pivots help Fox extremely well in neutral, especially considering the crack induced tool that his Up Tilt is. Microspacing pp up tilt can quite literally be your neutral if you put enough effort into it. Otherwise shorthop bair, auto cancelled dair, and dash attack are some of his other best hits. Fox Illusion is another one but it doesn’t exactly fit with the others. Anyone who’s first game was not Ultimate (normal mfs) would know this move used to go through shields, and, with Fox being Fox, it comboed extremely well. Yeah it was kinda a big part of neutral now that i think about it

What Smash 4 Fox doesn’t n’t want to do, however, is play neutral. Even though he’s pretty damn good at it. As per the glass cannon stereotype, more neutral interactions means mortality rates higher than the American covid ones. Moves like Up Tilt, Illusion, and Dash Attack are extremely good at setting up for Fox’s advantage state, which is at its core...

Advantage

... if they’re above you, they’re fucked.
Smash 4 Fox absolutely loves being in advantage; sometimes he can wipe away stocks faster than how ZeRo’s career flopped. You hit one of the aforementioned moves and start mashing that Up Air to start the Fox vortex. The greatest benefit of being the fastest fastfaller is being able to throw out aerials at breakneck speeds without actually breaking your neck. You can frame trap some characters pretty easily with Up Tilt and Up Air, not to mention being fourth fastest character in the game makes it pretty hard to be outrun.
You could also be Charliedaking and freestyle after hitting any single attack but he’s on a different level,

The ledge isn’t where he lets up either. Up Tilt is one of the best 2 framing tools in the game, and can consistently lead to bair to reset the situation. Basically, you better sit tight for a while if this dude ever hits you up.

Disadvantage

Aight, this is where Fox starts to let up.
Fox has historically had a bad disadvantage and Smash 4 is no exception. The ledge changes from Brawl to Smash 4 help Fox significantly, but it’s still not an amazing recovery. Fire Fox is slow as balls and pretty easy to hit Fox out of, Illusion has less depth than most Nintendo fans, an impressive feat to say the least, with the removal of shortening it. So Fox’s recovery is a flop.

Landing? Not very good either. The option to stall with Shine is still there, but only once. Being a fastfaller opens Fox up to his own special route of combos. Being one the lighter side of characters doesn’t help in that regard either. Getting out of combos and landing as Smash 4 Fox are two things that aren’t likely to happen; exactly why you don’t put your chips in by giving your opponent any chances to hit you. The only redeemable part of Fox’s disadvantage is his ability to escape the corner with Fox Illusion because that move is dummy broken. Classic glass cannon.

Killing

I suppose it’s time for the real cannon part.
Fox’s kill confirm nature carries onto Smash 4 as he can:
-Up Tilt > Up Air
-Up Tilt > Back Air
-Forward Air > Footstool (the cheater’s combo and stupidest ledgeguard)
-Neutral Air > Up Smash
-Down Air > Up Smash
-Sliding Reverse Forward Tilt > Up Smash (aka The Hipcheck)
-Jab 1 > Jab 2 > Up Smash

Not killing with one of these confirms likely means not killing at all; Fox thrives off of confirms like these.

Smash 4 Fox Players
Larry Lurr
Easily considered the best Fox throughout Smash 4’s lifespan, Larry had it all. The combos, the composure, the wins; not a surprise he only lost one Fox ditto the whole time the game was active. A goat through and through.
Light
Everyone that know Ultimate knows Light and his mass aggro-oppressive Fox, but do people know about his mass aggro-oppressive Smash 4 Fox? He only came up around the end of Smash 4 but seeing how he’s evolved is a masterpiece at its finest.
Charliedaking
CDK is textbook technical in whatever game he plays. Sporting a heavy use of both perfect pivots and footstools, he presents the most unorthodox Fox playstyle of them all. If you think what he does with Wolf is cool, just take a glance at some of his Smash 4 sets.
