I’ve been meaning to make this for a while and seeing some horror stories on twitter last night gave me the push to make this blog!

So who is a dermatologist and what do they do?

A dermatologist is a doctor that focuses on conditions that involve our skin, hair and nails. This includes, eczema, skin cancer, acne and a lot more. A dermatologist is able to diagnose, prescribe and treat various skin conditions. To become one you need to go to medical school and do several other programs before becoming licensed.

There are 4 branches of dermatology:

Medical:

diagnosing and providing treatment to avoid diseases that affect our skin, hair and nails.

Cosmetic:

provides treatments to improve the skin, hair & nails appearance. Like fillers, chemical peels, laser treatments.

Surgical:

undergoes surgical procedures to treat skin, hair and nail diseases.

Dermapathology:

specialises in dermatology & pathology.

Who is an esthetician and what do they do?

An esthetician a person trained to do skin analysis’, as well as a lot of in-depth treatments and even makeup. They provide consultations, and give advice on how to build a proper skincare routine that is right for their client. They’re usually the first people that come to mind when you think of a spa.

Who is better, an esthetician or dermatologist?

That is completely up to the individual and their skin conditions. Esthetician’s and dermatologist work best together because they are able to bring their different expertise to give you the best results. While your derm may prescribe you with some medication. An esthetician can help you build a routine to ensure you’re using every product and prescription properly.

Like everything in life, nobody is perfect so don’t take everything a dermatologist says as the absolute truth just because they’re doctors. This sounds strange but it’s true. They can make mistakes or may not know enough about certain things! It happens! Same with esthetician’s.

There will always be good derms and bad derms. Good esthy’s and and bad ones. It’s up to you to decide who to stop seeing and who to start seeing. Don’t use one bad experience to generalise a whole field. I promise there are good derms and esthetician’s out there.

You need to also do some basic research before meeting any. Both can give terrible advice. I’ve seen it from people on here on other social media platforms.

To end this, here are some people’s tweets about bad dermatology visits.

this is such an important topic! many people mix up the two. (like psychologists and psychiatrists aren't the same either)

Yup, one can prescribe medication (derm/psychiatrist) and the other can’t (esthy/psych). But thanks!
