Wish I had the motivation to make me a proper family tree for any of my families.

But I made one sim and am up to generation 12 with 16 branch off families

Wow 12 generations, that’s insane!! Does the family tree in the game still work with a family that large? I made an external family tree because I found that the game was randomly deleting sims from the in game tree.

It does not. I've had the same save for years before the so called patch to fix the deleting which clearly didn't work. Best to do as you did and make one externally
