There is 3 things to distinguish : the genome, the genotype and the phenotype.
- the genome : is the overall sequence of a cell. It includes the coding and non-coding sequences.
- the genotype : only concerns the coding sequences. The genotype is the allelic composition of all the genes. Sometimes you want to refer to a few genes and not all, so you say "the genotype of this individual for the gene X is". It has a specific notation.
- the phenotype : is not a sequence. It is all the observable physical traits. It has also a specific notation and like the genotype in this notation you use alleles (but just dominant ones here).
Sorry for the late reply but wanted to help ^^`
The phenotype is the part that is really expressed. While the structure of DNA codes for things that sometimes Are not expressed for example a recessive gene.
The Genotype is not phenotype
