Some people say we just need First Amendment protection vs Federal Recognition
Bear with me on this.
The First Amendment is Freedom Of Speech means the GOVERNMENT cannot restrict your freedom of speech except for a few instances like threatening someone with harm like screaming fire in a crowded theater.
The First Amendment does not cover legal protection under the law like being fired for being trans or refused a loan for being black or being told you cant rent here for being Jewish.
Corporations and clubs and churches are exempt from the First Amendment, the Shriners prevent women from ing and how many times have you heard Facebook taking down a racist post even though the N-word is First Ammendment. Even porn is free speech and here you will get the ban hammer of death if you post it.
So if we loose our rights this will start a slippery slope. An employer can fire you for being trans if this goes through. What's to stop them from saying I won't hire gays or medically treat a lesbian hire a black person refuse to rent to a Jewish person or a ginger or say left handed is evil you're fired.
Everyone will end up suing everyone and it will be a nightmare.
Some laws can be state by state, Florida it's illegal to release pythons into the everglades which is a good thing. A city might have a noise ordinance.
But civil rights have to be at a federal level, just think if gay marriage was still state by state or if we still had segregation state by state.
