Fifty years ago, we sent men to the moon.
We're going to do it again by 2024.
"On Dec. 11, 2017, President Trump signed Space Policy Directive 1."²
NASA wants to continue exploring the cosmos, and that means we must pioneer ways to go further and to use the resources we find at our cosmic destinations.
NASA created a completely new rocket, the SLS, or Space Launch System, just for this project.¹ With it, NASA built a new capsule, Orion, to help the astronauts who will be exploring deep space.¹
The plans to mobilize to the moon include partnerships with commercial businesses.² This is not the only aspect that is giving the mission to the moon a whole new approach than 50 years ago, though.
NASA is developing a waypoint, Gateway, that will orbit the moon as a piece of transitional infrastructure to help astronauts safely live on the moon. Gateway will bounce between the orbits of Earth and of that of the moon.¹
The greater mission is to move humans to Mars and beyond. This is not a conclusion to fifty years ago, but this is a catapult to launch us into new adventures in space exploration.

My concern is that it took them 50 years to find the motivation to do this again. They purposely ignored it until private companies started and they just jumped on the bandwagon because they knew that their organization would be left in the dust if they didn’t.
