Zoey Darkcarer, a master of possession raised to daemonhood, finds a diary on her study. She tries to read the strange calligraphy on the ruined paper ing one of her first incursions, made with one of warbands she had enjoyed when she was human in past. The diary belongs to a mighty sorcerer who deceased during that disastrous campaign in the Hexis sector.

The Hexis sector has long been stubborn against the black legion. Constant attacks were repelled by its imperial defenders since the opening of the Cicatrix Maledictum. And now, with the return of the lion, the system had been reinforced with the dark angels.

But even now, with their new protectors, their faith wanes and is being broken by the new siege. Each warband unified under the banner of the black legion, each seeking the warmaster's favor. Their goal-our goal-is to break the siege and put an end to the dogs of the Imperium.
