Ketterdam is bleeding.

The Barrel has always been a nest of rotting promises, but this is deliberate. Surgical. My men are vanishing. My enemies are growing smarter. And someone out there is using my tactics to dismantle everything I’ve built.

The Widow, they call her. She kills with lace and silence, builds her empire out of shadows and stolen girls. And now she wants Inej.

So I do what I do best.

I let her go.

I burn our alliance in the eyes of the city.

I tell her she means nothing and she looks at me like she almost believes it.

But when she walks away, every instinct in me says this isn’t strategy.

It’s suicide.

I keep telling myself it’s just another job.

But the empty space where she used to stand says otherwise.

And if she doesn’t come back whole, I’ll turn this entire city into a graveyard to find the pieces.

𝑰𝑵𝑬𝑱

I was trained to walk without sound, to strike without fear. But nothing silences a heart like betrayal.

He didn’t flinch when he said the words.

“We never needed saints. Just knives.”

That’s what I am to him, then? Just another blade to throw?

But I knew the truth behind his eyes.

I’ve seen the way his hands shake when he thinks no one’s watching.

I know the way he looks at me when he forgets to guard his gaze.

Still, I walked into the Widow’s court with my spine straight and my throat bare.

I pretended I believed the lie that Kaz Brekker would trade me for the Barrel.

And every night, I wonder how many days it’ll take before he forgets what he sent into the fire.

They’ve already survived the impossible. Kaz Brekker and Inej Ghafa first crossed paths not as lovers, but as weapons each sharp in their own way, each used to being alone. Through the chaos of the Ice Court heist, the betrayal of Van Eck, the horrors of jurda parem, and the war between nations they never asked to be a part of, they carved a place beside each other in a city built to swallow them whole.

Kaz, the boy with gloves and ghosts, whose hands tremble beneath the calm.

Inej, the girl who vanished without a sound, who still sees every cage even after she escapes them.

They’ve shared blood, secrets, battles, and silence. They’ve stared death in the eye and kept walking. They’ve never said “I love you,” but they’ve shown it in the only ways they know how: a saved life, a returned blade, a name spoken like a vow.

But after Ketterdam was reclaimed and Van Eck was ruined, they parted.

Inej took to the seas on her ship, The Wraith, hunting slavers and freeing the stolen.

Kaz stayed behind in the Barrel, rebuilding his empire brick by brutal brick.

Letters came and went. Hopes rose and fell. They promised themselves time but time is cruel in a city like Ketterdam

Ketterdam is unraveling. Quietly. Bloodlessly. Brilliantly.

Kaz Brekker, now the cold iron heart of the Barrel’s power structure, is facing a threat that feels all too familiar and all too personal. His network is being dismantled with surgical precision. Key lieutenants have vanished. Shipments rerouted. Safehouses compromised. No fingerprints. No noise. Only a calling card: a black silk ribbon tied in a spider’s knot, left where his people used to be.

The name spreading through the streets is whispered like a curse: The Widow. She’s not after his territory. She’s after his legacy. And worse her assassins move like Wraiths.

When Inej returns to the city, she brings more than rumors she brings a message. A target list. And her name is at the top.

To stop the Widow, Kaz proposes a plan. One only she can pull off. A public betrayal. A staged fracture between Kaz and Inej to convince the Widow that the Wraith is defeatable and recruitable. A plunge into the heart of the enemy’s operation, one that will demand Inej become something she once swore to destroy.And Kaz? He’ll be left behind, watching from the shadows, unable to protect her, unable to reach her… and unable to lie to himself any longer about what she means to him.

But pretending to fall apart has a cost.
