Early Childhood

Diego was born before his twin sister, Lucy, who was stillborn. His mother died in the process of having her. Mr. Shade, with no other way of coping, blamed their subconsciously blamed their deaths on Diego. On top of this, in his grief, he became very work-driven, causing him to neglect Diego. This neglect caused resentment towards his father, and other deep-seated issues, such as a need for control over other people, and approval/attention from his father - but his greatest satisfaction would be to outshine him.

University Life

Diego in his father’s footsteps majored in business and engineering. He did not particularly care for either, but he did well in his classes. He worked part-time for his dad at Shade Fishery (a cover for Urbanshade where they collected DNA for experiments - Diego was not aware of this but he had his suspicions). He was also in a band with Sebastian, and they got along well.

One night while under the influence of drugs, Diego killed a homeless man out of morbid curiosity. He snuck into the fishery and disguised his chopped up body as bait (which worked surprisingly well, especially in attracting sharks). He killed 8 more people and sold them to the fishery under the name of a fake supplier. After a police investigation began, Diego’s final kill was Sebastian’s wife, which Diego used to frame Sebastian. He was arrested and issued a death penalty before being taken by Mr. Shade, unbeknownst to Diego.

EXR-P Program

A private investigator hired by Sebastian’s mother is later able to uncover the fake supplier and enough evidence to arrest Diego. Thanks to a handsome payout from Mr. Shade, Diego is not issued a death penalty, but a lifetime in prison. If anyone were going to decide how his son died, it would be him. Many years later, two days after the Hadal Blacksite lockdown, Mr. Shade forcibly places his son into the EXR-P program. Since he’d been imprisoned, Mr. Shade was struggling to come up with a use for Diego. This was the perfect opportunity - his success in the EXR-P program would determine whether he was worthy of being called Mr. Shade’s son, or if he would die trying. Mr. Shade promises Diego that if he makes it back alive with the crystal, he’ll be given a role as a high-ranking personnel in Urbanshade.

Determined to survive and because of his bloodthirsty nature, Diego fights back against the monsters using handmade gadgets, (thanks to his engineering skills) and even manages to kill some of them. Because of this, Sebastian does not offer his wares to Diego, but instead actively hunts him.

If Diego reaches the crystal, he will destroy it, sacrificing himself and everything still left in the facility, as a final act of rebellion against his father.

PERSONALITY

:fish: At times incredibly manipulative, otherwise brutually honest.

:fish: Very self absorbed and materialistic, like his father.

:fish: Used to get a lot of girls, because of his charisma and looks, despite being somewhat of a misogynist.

:fish: He did not, however, have much luck with boys. Because has a lot of internalised homophobia and is very deep in the closet.

:fish: Once had a thing for Sebastian, which was distressing for him. This contributed to Sebastian being target for framing, among other things, like jealousy of his relationship with his mum.

IN-GAME MECHANICS

Diego would be a playable character, either selected from a player selection screen, or as the default. His gameplay would introduce a new three new mechanics: scavenging, crafting, and the ability to trap and kill node monsters.

If a monster is killed, Sebastian’s shop will no longer be available, and you must defeat him before reaching the crystal. The player has the choice to either destroy the crystal or retrieve it, but the former is the canonical ending for Diego.
