Aru sighed she finally got everyone from the school to the town center; being class president is hard. A huge festival was being held for some reason she did not know of. Aru walked around alone watching as the colors surrounded her and the children running by. Mook was watching her from afar, realising how creepy he was being turned away right before he heard soft sobbing. Mook turned back to see what was wrong only to see Aru kneeling down next to a little boy. Mook leaned forward listening again.
"Hi there, what's wrong?" Aru softly cooed to the small boy covered in tears. "I-I lost m-my mommy." The little boy burst into even more tears. "Well what does your mom look like?" Aru asked trying to help. "Sh-she said never to talk to strangers!" The little one began to be difficult. Mook contemplated going to help right before Aru began again, "Oh? Welp! My name is Aru, what's yours?", "Michael" "Oh yeah? My favorite icecream flavor is chocolate!" "No! Strawberry's the best!",
"O, ho ho, really?" "Yeah!" Aru slowly made the little boy open up. "My mom has short, straight black hair, and big brown eyes. Also the last time I saw her she was cooking breakfast in the kitchen!" "My momma told me not to talk to strangers!" The little boy yelled in Aru's face, he began to cry some more. Aru stood up straight smiling "My I haven't seen such a temper since, Apalala!", "Who?" Aru spiked the little boys interest.
"Apalala, where have I heard that name before?" Mook pondered.
"What? You haven't heard of Apalala? Apalala, the dragon of Swat River, or River of Suvastu?" The little boy shook his head as he was ready to hear the story.
"Well, Apalala was a human named Gangi before he turned into a dragon. He used subtle charms to restrain the power of the wicked dragons in the region so that they could not afflict the crops with violent storms. His work enabled the people to produce abundance, and in return, each family paid him a tribute. However, after many years ed, many forgot or refused to pay the tribute, and Gangi became wrathful. He prayed that he might transform into a dragon to afflict them with storms and destroy their crops himself.", "No!" The young boy shouted, but Aru continued.
"At the end of his life, Gangi was reborn as a terrifying water serpent or dragon of that country. In his new incarnation as Apalala, he raised hailstorms and floods so that he could feast upon the crops of the fields. The flowing source of the river emitted a white stream that devastated all the products of the earth." Aru waved her hands around watching as the little boy became excited.
"The Buddha, moved with pity for the plight of the people, descended supernaturally that he might convert the violent dragon Apalala and tame him. Vajrapani, Buddha's companion, took up a thunderbolt, and smote the mountainside where Apalala lived. The dragon-king Apalala came forth, terrified, and paid reverence to the Buddha. He listened as the Buddha preached the law, and his heart became pure as his faith awakened. After his conversion, the Buddha forbade him to ravage the crops. Apalala thanked him for the sacred instruction, but he feared for his own survival. He said, "All my sustenance comes from the fields of men." Without his storms and floods, he would starve. Thus, he asked the Buddha to allow him a single gathering every twelve years. Out of comion, the Buddha permitted this. That is why, once every twelve years, calamity results from the overflow of the White River." Aru finished the story.
"What happened next?" The little boy asked desperately looking at Aru. "Well that's it. Apalala was a Naga so could turn half human half snake." Aru leaned down closer to the boy as if she was telling him a secret. "I heard once Apalala fell in love with a human." Aru leaned back again, "Yes, that would make sense," Aru pretended to think. "You must be related to the great Apalala!", "No I'm not!" The little boy yelled. "I'm not a dragon! Dragons are the bad guys!"
Mook's heart dropped as he heard the little boy yell. "No, who told you that!" Aru asked kneeling down. "In my sister's stories! The mean, old, dragon steals the princess, and the good, shiny, night slays the dragon.", "Well did you know that the dragon was just lonely?" Aru asked once again grabbing both Mook's and the young boys attention "Yes, Dragons are like people. They have emotions and are intelligent beings so they can be both good or bad but, I always prefer and love dragons that are good." Mook blushed in his little spot behind the tree.
"If anyone sees a young, four year old, boy, by the name of Michael, please report him to the front. He is wearing a white and green striped shirt with khaki shorts." The speakers rang with a tired tone.
"Seems like they're looking for you my little dragon!" Aru smiled taking the young boy's hand and walking away.
