Today commemorates the Haymarket affair, in which an unknown bomber’s actions led to the brutal police crushing of a protest for a standard work day, resulting in hundreds of arrests and four hangings, including the notable anarchist Albert Parsons — the prosecution would it that none of the defendants was the bomber during the trial. The legacy of this state-sponsored lynching is now commemorated by May Day demonstrations, a tradition started by the Second International, the Catholic Church setting 1 May to celebrate Saint Joseph the Worker, and Emma Goldman having herself buried near the graves of those hanged.
Workers of all countries, unite!
