Friendship | Is Pokémon a Perfect Example of Such a Concept?

Arty is here to provide an intellectual in depth observation on the topic of friendship and whether or not Pokémon is a suitable example of what exactly friendship is. Do note that this is my perception on how friendships should be like and that all of this is subjective. You do not have to agree with the thoughts laid out in this blog. Rather I want you to discuss what exactly defines a friendship to you and whether or not you see Pokémon as a perfect fit. Without further adieu....

WHAT IS A FRIEND?

The term "friend" usually have multiple meanings with the popular version being:

One attached to another by affection or esteem.

This is how most people normally view friendships and it's exactly the kind Pokémon portrays; however, I do not find this to be the most suitable and realistic approach towards what a friend really is (at least not exactly).

People seem to look towards positivity as a sign of friendship. While yes friendship does indeed requires positivity, I find it blatantly preposterous to only seek out the positivities as a way to gain friendship. This includes the stereotypical assumptions from society like sharing is caring and everything along those lines.

WHAT EXACTLY DEFINES FRIENDSHIP?

While it is obvious that one must have a positive standing in a friendship I find that having negativity as well creates a true and genuine bond. This includes opening up about certain things that concerns you and getting into verbal/physical fights with one another. Now I know you may think it's strange, but it's honestly what creates a true friendship like no other.

I've seen many times and again friends who would only talk to me out of convenience or for a happy moment. Usually the friends I believe are great are the ones I can actually open to about my negativities and occasionally get into fights with. There are those who would just leave and outright forget about your existence because they just don't see you anymore out of convenience; however, the real stars are the ones who've been there through thick and thin and helped you at your worst.

Whenever people asks me "Who are your best friends on here?" I honestly had to stop and think because I can't recall when I ever had someone on here that I can actually share my negativities with in a comfortable manner. That's when you realize that maybe some of your friends may not have cared about you. It happens time and again. I've had friends who'd suddenly leave and never talk to me again despite how much we'd claim to be besties, but at the same time I've had those who stayed and as such I've been grateful to them. That's what a real friend is.

The question is should your circle be small or wide? Of course that is up to you and what type of "friends" you desire. I think that a smaller circle is the way to go. Pokémon have shown trainers having a small group of friends that they'd travel with on their adventures. While it may be portraying a way too positive perception on what a friend really is, it is, however, giving off the right sense by suggesting a smaller group is the best way possible.

DO I THINK POKÉMON IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE?

To me personally I'd say yes and no for several reasons. I think it's a great example because throughout many scenarios Pokémon have promoted a diverse cast that helps children understand that just because we may be completely different we could still find a common ground. It also shares in the belief in that a smaller group is better in of bonding; however, I find Pokémon friendships a tad too positive. I'm not gonna lie and say there weren't any negatives because there have been, but Pokémon is more about positivity and as such can give off the wrong outlook at times such as being oblivious to anyone you meet.

SO WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT FRIENDS AND HOW IT SHOULD BE?

I feel I may not have given a proper explanation as to why exactly I see negativity as a good foundation due to personal reasons, but you can grasp what I'm trying to describe with the little bits here and there. Though I may not have as many wonderful friends who're ready to me whenever I need it I'd like to thank them for everything they've done up to this point for the past 2 years (if you actually lasted that long). Feels like the more I go through the days on this app the more I begin to lose touch with the ones I thought were friends; the ones who made me believe we actually had an understanding, but the ones I know who've been there I couldn't thank enough. Some don't understand how much of a positive reinforcement you guys have been and you know who you are. Again thank you and as for now....
