Ormiopi

Ormiopi’s name is derivative of the scientific word for ants, “Ormi” from “Formicidae” and “Opi” from “Opal.”

When I went in creating them, I wanted them to be pretty weak and innocent. Something you can let up onto your shoulder. A very big part of their behavior lies in following Descipede’s guidance and largely depending on it for protection in whatever time they’re not working on burrowing or foraging, so I tried to capture baby Pokémon vibes, not only in appearance but in their sociable nature and base stat total, so you’d totally see one chilling with a Woobat or playing with a Diglett or something.

However, rarely, an Ormiopi will be the exception, whether it’s more prone to battling or just has a knack for it, and the strongest Ormiopi of a colony will evolve into Descipede. This is not very often as they have very long lifespans.

Descipede

Descipede is a little more on the nose with its name, being derived from the words “Iridescent” and “Millipede.”

Ormiopi evolves into Descipede at level 41.

I wanted its base stat total to be relatively high with a priority in defensive stats, given it’s typically responsible for ensuring the wellbeing of several hyperactive babies.

They usually patrol their caves or help in foraging during the day and huddle up with the colony once it’s time to rest. They’re also responsible for the integration of other Pokémon into their colony, typically upon the request of an existing member.

Sometimes two existing colonies will merge if they occupy the same space, in which both Descipede will share the caretaker role.

The Ability, Glint, is specific to this line. I envisioned that when an opponent would get close enough to physically attack, there would be a small chance that the opal’s iridescence would reflect too many colors to process and cause confusion.
