Elizabeth Acevedo was born in New York City to Dominican immigrants and, at the age of fourteen, competed in her very first poetry slam which led her down the path to writing. She holds a bachelors degree in performing arts from the George Washington University and an MFA from the University of Maryland as well.

Since coming out with her very first book of poetry Poet X, she’s won many awards from the Boston Globe Award, the Walter Dean Myers Awards for Outstanding Children’s Literature in the Teen category, and the 2018 National Book Award for Young People's Literature. Additionally, it was a finalist for the Kirkus Prize. The novel also won the Michael L. Printz Award for 2019. She also became a New York Times bestseller with the release of her debut novel.

Aside from writing books on poetry, she also writes young adult fiction as well, which put her in the finals for the YesYes Chapman book prize.

Elizabeth Acevedo is a very accomplished poet and I highly recommend you check out her debut novel Poet X. This book has inspired many a starting writer, including myself.
