The call of the Sea
Her hair was wet from the salty water
None of her clothes free of the beach's grey sand
A necklace of shimmering shells
And eyes as deep as the neverending ocean
When she walked by people whispered
She is really not like others
There is something different about her
You better stay away from her
She smiled as though she didn’t mind
The hushed words and the side-eying looks
She had never known any different
Where did she come from? Nobody knew
Only that a fisherman had one day found the weeping child
Swaddled in a blanket of sea grass
And he had taken her in and raised her
But her birth remained a mystery
She let the waves kiss her toes
And watched the fish swimming deep and the birds soaring high
Wishing that she could be one of them
On land, she always felt the unrest in her heart
Only the nights on the boat could give her peace
When the salty air filled her lungs
And the water licked the wooden planks
The others loved yet feared the ocean
Thinking of all the men it had swallowed who never returned
But she knew that there was nothing to fear
When the sea called, she came
And she laughed as the waves danced around her fingers
Welcoming her back
The sea was her home.
