Why horses are a big commitment

Hello everyone, I would like to talk today about why horses are a big commitment :green_heart:

━━━━━━⊱✿⊰━━━━━━

THEIR EXPENSIVE

━━━━━━⊱✿⊰━━━━━━

horses are very expensive animals. Their hay, vet bills, grain, tack and everything else is very expensive. buying a horse is the cheapest part and that can be up to 4,000$

I’ve personally owned horses my entire life and have been riding for 20 years. My mom and dad both grew into horses so I fortunately got the luck to grow up on a farm with goats and such.

When my mare had her foal, Bella, we had the vet come and check them both which cost us 500$ or so for just a checkup. Then Bella got sick again and that cost us another 500$, so it was around 1,000$ in one month for just a vet bill.

My mom and dad are good friends with the people we get hay from so we get a discount. For a round bale about 5-6 feet tall it’s only 10$. For square bales their only 2-3$ a piece. So for me I spend maybe 500$ a year in hay.

I have a very expensive tack set about 800$, so that definitely adds up since I like to collect bridles and such lol. I myself am personally bitless riding but I find it’s good to teach a horse to accept both.

I don’t spend money on farriers because my dad does it so figure out how much that costs around your area

━━━━━━⊱✿⊰━━━━━━

They take up a lot of your time

━━━━━━⊱✿⊰━━━━━━

I find myself at the barn for at least 10 hours a day(but my barn is my home, ok not rlly) but I LOVE just watching my horses play and graze. I ride about 5 hours a day(yes I love riding very much)

It also doesn’t help that I have a spoilt filly that needs to be trained lol. Training is a big commitment especially.

━━━━━━⊱✿⊰━━━━━━

Are horses worth it?

━━━━━━⊱✿⊰━━━━━━

If you have enough space, time, and money. Definitely! I love my horses and would pay a million dollars, and I could never replace them. They have a special place in my heart for life.

━━━━━━⊱✿⊰━━━━━━

How should I go by getting a horse?

━━━━━━⊱✿⊰━━━━━━

Bring someone who is a experienced rider and can ride the horse around a lot. Ask general questions and see what the horse spooks at. If ur a beginner rider, get a horse that doesn’t spook at a lot of things and can accept almost anything done to them. Picking hooves and grooming is a basic thing to be taught so ask for that too. And also standing for the farrier.

━━━━━━⊱✿⊰━━━━━━

this is my personal cost for my horses and it may vary :green_heart: have a good day everyone

Nice work! My farrier actually takes off 10 dollars per horse until it’s down to 25$!

Ah, yeah I wish I was taught, so at least I would be able to do it instead of getting a date from the farrier. But if you ever do need one, Facebook actually saved us in our search for another!
