introduction

It was the golden hour, where the soft sunlight sparkled over the sea and ripples of warmth engulfed me. She sat beside me and took my hand, filling me again with euphoria. She was my everything, and i was glad that i had came to California. My past was horrifying, and she was the one who got me past that and brought me into a better life. She is who i thank and whom i love, son chaeyoung. Holding her hand in peaceful silence while watching a sole seagull flutter over the rippling beach waves, i reminisced how i was like it, all solo when i first came to California....

backstory | mina's pov

Summertime is always supposed to be a fun time, but I just moved out and I'm currently living in California. Now I have to earn money so I can live, I have to start finding a job to help pay for college. I thought all this stuff was boring until I met someone in my life...

"Mom, we're moving. I told you, that guy! All he does is to drink and smoke. I want a happy life... and you deserve it too. You're my everything, Mom. I know that you kept from divorcing him very long ago because you cared about my feelings. But you've tolerated him for long enough! I am an adult now. I am going to work and find us a motel to live in.i will pay the rent and... You dont have to suffer by the hands of him anymore. "i spoke out, for once with such desperation and hope. Tears glistened in my Mother's eyes, as she soothed her hand through my dark, glossy hair." Alright, daughter. You've grown up. I will follow you to wherever you want and... I'll leave that man. " My strong fighting Mother. Yes. I will definitely give her a better life, and happiness. California. The place where rents were supposedly low in motels and the pay was high in the city. There I would head.

" Creak... "screeched our old luggage as i dragged it on the cold, spotless floor of the airport. The budget flight we had took had given us food, but i could tell by Mother's lack of energy that food was needed. And so desperation crawled in like ants on fire. I promised mother that i could afford the food, and give her a life of happiness. Is this how it looks like? Two tiny spots in a sea of important-looking bespectacled businessmen rushing off with their fancy and expensive luggages? I shall work,and give Mother a good life.

She scrubbed and cleaned, and scrubbed and cleaned all they long. She did her work diligently, always reaching home drenched in sweat. But seeing Mother's warm smile, which grew even bigger everytime they upgraded their apartment, was enough for her.

One day, after trudging from the small, cosy shop uptown to her posh apartment with Mother, instead of the warm smile, she was greeted with furrowed brows. "Daughter, im old. I need you to be able to take care of yourself as well. All the money you earn right now is just going into my pocket. I'm using it to upgrade the apartments, I'm using it for grand buffets, but what about your education? I dont want you to remain as a waitress in a small restaurant all your life. one of your incentives to come here was because of your best friend? Go to school again, meet up again with that long-lost penpal of yours, and start over. I'm happy, but consider your own happiness as well, my dear mina. " Hearing those words struck hard on Mina's heart as she thought back of the golden friendship she once shared with Chaeyoung. It was worth a shot if she could see chaeyoung. She deserved happiness too right? And she needed education, to get out of her job. Hence, with a tone of finality, she decided, "Yes."

She walked silently down the school hall, trying desperately to cover the big hole in her school shoes. Clumsy her had not been familiar with the new neighborhood and promptly tripped on a stone, which led to her fall into a drain. "Urgh.." First school days were never good... From when she was young and penniless, she got mocked for her ruined school uniform. Now... She ripped her shoes because of a stupid mistake and would probably get made fun of again. Gosh... How silly I am! She thought, cheeks colored. Just then, a girl with an expensive-looking school uniform, who seemed to be super popular, around a group of girls,caught her attention. There was just something... But suddenly, one of the girls broke apart from the group and said nastily, "Ew! Look at that gaping hole in your shoes!" With that, any semblance of hope that that girl was chaeyoung vanished and she bowed down again with embarrassment.

But.. Before she had made it past three steps, an elegant, smooth voice gently cooed out, "Mina?" The girl in the centre of the group broke apart from the rest of the girls, who were busy gossiping and pointing at her. That dewy skin, beautiful brown eyes, tanned skin and wavy long amber curls. It was definitely her! "C-chaeyoung?" Mina said in disbelief, not knowing that her years of crying silently at night because of her desire to meet Chaeyoung again was gone once and for all. The girl, her everything, her best friend, the weirdo who always protected her, the angel, was right in front of her. She immediately rushed out and hugged chaeyoung with both arms, crushing chaeyoung, with her arms and wave of indescribable emotions. Chaeyoung's tears glistened under the light of the corridor lockers and she reached out to engulf Mina in a huge hug as well, not caring about the pointing and staring that the entire hallway were giving them.

"Sooo... I told you i was in california and you really did come, huh?" Chae said, amused, while taking large gulps out of her bowl of noodles. The canteen food was disgusting, but Mina's face and her apparent hunger was enough to keep her from puking the food out." Well, i thought that my Mom really needed that break from my Dad, i mean im an adult now, and i can tell that the relationship was toxic, you know. So i recalled what you said about California, low rent, high pay.. And of course.. Maybe a small sliver of a chance to meet you. So yep of course... i missed you so much, gosh! " The two friends shared a smile and Chaeyoung replied, happily," Oh how much i have missed you too, Mina. I'm glad that after so many up and downs of your life, you've gathered yourself up, moved past everything and we are finally re-united!" A big grin plastered itself onto her face momentarily.

" Caww... " A distant bird chirped and Mina was pulled back to reality. Sitting on the soft sand then, and watching strands of chaeyoung's hair fly in the wind, a spark of joy lit up in her chest. She had found happiness, with chaeyoung beside her, her Mother in the pink of health at home in their apartment, an education and a bright future ahead of her. She was all set, she thought cosily, as she snuggled up to chaeyoung and they shared a tiny laugh.
