The scraping of a lazy design choice aside, I don’t think I’ve ever talked about Scarab, Alden’s past Fire Beetle familiar/ arcane focus. One of Alden’s ancestors was the daughter of Sirrion, the god of Fire and Change. This is how Alden gained his pyrokinetic ability. However, the ability skipped several generations and Alden had no to train him, so his abilities would often spiral out of control. Sirrion sent Alden Scarab, a Fire Beetle able to teach him how to properly use his power as well as be a sort of training wheels, connecting itself to Alden and acting as an exit point for his abilities. After a year of training, Scarab burned out and died. Though Alden could now control his flames, the lose of a teacher and friend still weighed heavily on him.
