I'm looking for a campaign to , preferably as a player. My phb is in storage along with my dice, though. I can do discord, roll20 or playrole. I'm 23, if that matters.
And if that don't work, well...
I have been thinking of trying to dm but I don't know anything about it. I don't know how to build a world without it immediately turning into a dumpster fire. I don't have any experience in that area nor do I have any reference material or even an understanding of how to build encounters. I also don't know how to determine the amount of xp earned. Basically I know nothing about being a dm but I wouldn't mind trying at somepoint.
But anyway here's an idea for a character or possible npc (if I ever dm).

Retired paladin (oathbreaker) - This character was a loyal and faithful paladin to a god/goddess. They firmly believed they were on a righteous path, and shown to be one of the most promising heros of his town. He was tasked with a special mission from the place of worship, He had to gather a group of adventurers and escort this lady to the god/goddess' sacred place of rest. Everything for the most part went as expected.
When they reach the place of rest, the paladin and the woman are escorted to some private chambers to prepare for what's next and the rest of the party was taken to the sanctuary. Eventually the lady and the paladin are brought in. This where it's revealed the paladin was to sacrifice her to the god/goddess. Despite his loyalty and faith, he couldn't do it. It broke his personal morals and resulted in breaking his oath to serve with the utmost loyalty without question. He and his fellow adventurers save the woman and help her go into hiding. He doesn't return back home, doesn't continue any work as a paladin but still goes on adventures.
What I would like to see at somepoint with this character, probably as a side quest- as if by some sick twist of fate, a young paladin is organizing a party for a mission they were tasked with. The same one the, now retired, paladin had taken for the same god/goddess. The girl in question happens to be the daughter of the previous woman who had gotten away. The oathbreaker decides to not reveal his past and has the internal debate, speak up and warn the others of what will happen. Despite they may not take him seriously. Or just wait it out and let the new paladin and girl decide their fates, for maybe they could go through with what he couldn't.
Since he's hiding his past I think he'd try to lie about his class. He might say he was a rogue or fighter that was cursed with necromancy powers that "drains his life force to use" but overall he just tries to fake it 'till he makes it. But overall he's good guy, but this journey seems to make him bitter and tends to butt-heads with the newbie paladin more than before.
