Or, as a player, how many short rests do you typically take per day.

I don't LET my players have a short rest, they choose how many to do. If they want to make too many and their mission requires they're rather fast, they might lose part of the reward or what they're looking for might not be there anymore when they arrive.

If they are inside a dungeon or the den of enemies and they take a rest there, they'll likely be spotted. This doesn't mean "roll for initiative", but someone may notice and alert someone in charge. Which might be even worse.

All in all, I don't restrict the players at all. But they know me and they gotta consider the consequences. If they're on a restricted time frame for their mission, they'll have to think if they can make it fast with the barbarian at 3 hp and the casters out of spells, or if they can allow 1 (or 8, depends if gritty realism or not) more hours.

Also the last few campaigns I've played in we used gritty realism (8 hours short rests) and I really enjoyed those, so there's that as an option too.

Why do they take so many short rests? Do they not have a healer?

Context is everything!

People in, say, the undermountain will want more short rests than people in a major city. If you have healing items it spells you probably won’t need them but if you’re a caster who burns a lot of spells you might. It all depends.

I’d say that the average of short rests is probably 0-1 in populated areas and even wild areas, but in dungeons, especially with boss monsters inside, they may want 1-2. If they are missing things like a tank, or a healer or even a heavy hitter they may feel-right or wrong- like they need every advantage they can get

Mmhmm! I definitely agree with that too. Like, the campaigns I play in take place in cities and have shorter dungeons, so we don’t need as many short rests.

Personally I feel like one short rest power day should be enough. Maybe two for a particularly long or eventful day.

Our DM is considering changing the short rest to 8 hours and the long rest to a day.

We never took short rests anyway and it makes a lot more sense imo. If you just got beaten to shit by a white dragon, a good night’s sleep isn’t going to suddenly make you all better. I think we’re going to have to change how spell recovery works in that case. We’ll figure it out.

It will also be different in dungeons, since you’re always on high alert.

Oh, you’re DM would like Pathfinder 2e and Starfinder then. Both have different systems for how health is regained.

In Starfinder, it is almost brutal because HP is regained 1 - or two if you spend the whole day resting - per day. However, Starfinder also has Stamina Points and a lot of downtime while you’re traveling on the ship.

Anything over 5 and I start rolling random encounters but they can take them as needed
