I’ve noticed over the course of years playing D&D that 1v1 combat goes one of two ways. Either it takes forever and a day to complete, or it’s completely lopsided and ends too quick to be any fun.

D&D is built, obviously, for group encounters. But much like how hoard combat can become bogged down, so too can 1v1 combat. In addition, it often leaves the players who aren’t fighting either feeling left out or constantly chiming in and making the fight feel inorganic.

To make matters worse, it’s often not very complex. It’s just the two combatants taking turns swinging at each other, and often any creative ideas or tactics are shot down by poor DMs or the limitations of the rules.

So my questions here are, can 1v1 combat be done well? Is there any changes you’d make? Any new rules? Or Is it so against the systems and so antithetical to D&D’s core design ethos that it is nearly impossible to do it well consistently? Vote and comment your reasoning ^w^
