Swapping drivers on Nascar or Any other Motorsports is something that happens from time to time but in 2003 Nascar witnessed 2 seperate driver swaps that didn't help anyone but rather sent everyone into state of decline and irrelevance for each driver.
Elliott Sadler and Ricky Rudd
Sadler and Rudd swapped rides after 2002 season as Elliott Sadler was taking over the 2nd Robert Yates entry that became the 38 team while Ricky Rudd was heading over to famous 21 car at Wood Brothers Racing but both drivers were trying to figure out there new surroundings as they both drivers had up and down seasons which lefted both of them outside the top 20 in points at conclusion of 2003 with only 6 top 5 finishes between the 2 drivers. Elliott Sadler would have breakout season in 2004 while scoring 2 wins and making inaugural Chase for the Cup were he finished 9th in points while Ricky Rudd continued to struggle at WBR due to being up there in age which is normally the downfall of many drivers as Rudd finished 24th in points with 1 top 5 and 3 top 10's. 2005 was death of both drivers career's as Elliott Sadler collapses during summer and missed the playoffs entirely after sitting 3rd in points following summer Daytona race which Elliott Sadler never recovered from collapse which ultimately lead to his release from team following 2006 Walkins Glen race then never found that competitive fire in Cup Series again before moving back down to Xfinity Series and Ricky Rudd was released following another disappointing season that placed him 21st in points but Ricky's age was the main factor in his release as Rudd wouldn't race in 2006 then Robert Yates Racing signed him to compete for 1 more season before Ricky Rudd retired following 2007.
Jeff Green and Steve Park
Both drivers were fully signed for 2003 season but both drivers weren't living up to there team owners expectations and were on hot seat which placed pressure on both drivers to find success immediately or face unemployment both drivers managed to score 1 pole and 1 top 10 finish but multiple bad finishes lefted them sitting outside the top 30 in points which led to the releases of both drivers following spring Richmond race. Few days later both drivers get employed by same teams that once fired them just few days as Steve Park found minimum success at Richard Childress Racing's 30 AOL car by scoring another pole,Top 5 finish at fall Michigan race and finished the season 32nd in points but Steve Park was released following season as the team was looking for young driver and Steve Park was unable to find go ride in Cup Series before ultimately retiring from racing all together while Jeff Green failed to turnaround his career at DEI which lead to his release after Darlington then becoming journeyman for remainder of his career.
Everyone who participated in the swap ended up hurting all 4 drivers and race teams that were involved would hurt everyone in future as Robert Yates Racing shutdown in 2008,Wood Brothers Racing went into part-time role until 2016 and all drivers who participated in swap didn't find any success following there stints and each driver fell into irrelevance with exception Elliott Sadler's 2004 season but overall this driver swap impacted everyone that majority of them never recovered from.
